When this record was released, no one really went around saying that they were 'emo' or made 'emo music' it was in a sense a meme to popular culture.
If anything it would be considered 'alternative rock' by most critics at the time.
The emo tag was placed on it by mainstream press as a criticism for its commercial flop.
However it struck a chord with the alternative crowd who embraced bands like modest mouse mouse, built to spill, the promise ring, etc. who were also tagged with this derogatory term.
This scene jokingly embraced the term to describe the more intimate alternative/punk of the time.
None may have done more to promote the term than Blink 182 who had a song named EMO on their breakout '97 record Dude Ranch.
Essentially bringing the term to 'high school middle america' and not just used in indie publications or big city scenes like DcHx.
The tag was meant to mock and denigrate, and yet was embraced ;^) .....by the youth.
come to think of it, much like word nigger has been turned into a term of endearment by some african americans
I guess in a sense, we're all niggers. emo niggers
(too long to proof read, don't judge me)

i mean emo wasn't originally regarded as bad when it came about in DC. it was just a way for bands to seperate themselves from hardcore and become emocore and then emo just was a short term for those bands
>>63936425
Tags that were used to mock or denigrate many times were embraced by artists in general.
Fauvism and impressionism for example.
