He has some other pre-Mellow Gold stuff you should check out. Golden Feelings and A Western Harvest Field are both great. One Foot in the Grave is a bit different but you might like it too. I honestly don't know much else that sounds like early Beck though

I just heard Anais Mitchell's Hadestown the other day. It spans a bunch of different genres, much like Beck, but Anais is ostensibly a folk artist. It's all pretty bittersweet considering it's a concept album about Orpheus' trip to Hades.
