hair/glam metal had the best guitars of any mainstream metal period. The bar was set incredibly high, Winger were basically a Glam metal Dream Theater. My favorite is Nuno Bettencourt but I always thought Extreme were unfairly lumped into the hair/glam scene because of their looks and More than Words. They had a sound that was dirty and funky and heavy and unlike anything else around.

Clean vocals are fucking horrible, back-up chorus is fucking horrible, riffs are boring, production sounds like The Contortionist but faker.

It's the kind of music that sounds great for about a week, and then there's nothing backing it up. it's lacking in all substance and depth.

I'm reminded of The Human Abstract: my first listen wasn't too bad. I enjoyed it. But I could barely take a second, and a week later, the third listen physically hurt me, because it was so sugary and lacking in substance.

Experimentation can be great, but most people who make experimental metal aren't trained in composition enough to know how to do it well. So the experimental metal ends up being metal with odd thigns tacked on, or albums that are nothing but noise, or albums that are too long because the band doesn't know when enough is enough.

They suck as because isn't actually that much experimentation there. Shit like that has been done before by non-metal bands and done better. So right out of the gate, that's not experimenting, that's just doing what someone else did because it worked there.

Then they do it badly. Goatpsalm in paticular just sounds like they are trying to be as spoopy as possible with no actual idea how. And Efferat is just boring noisy shit. I've heard shit like this before. These aren't even experimental bands, which is another reason why people are suspecting you of being bait.

Are you that guy who needs melody to actually like anything? Please post something experimental if you think what I posted wasn't. Wunder got rid of Phil for making some homophobic statement, and then Pitchfork and metalcucks applaud him, now the album is out and Pitchfork calls it there best ever, when it's no longer got a hint of black metal or aggression and is just rehashing the same progressive tropes they had before while making them more accessible. Relative to their earlier sound.

power is basically heavy metal with soaring high vocals, heavier than normal riffs, with typically virtuoso performers. See Jag Panzer, Omen, Dio, Crimson Glory, Fates Warning. The European bands typically were both power and speed metal at the same time.
Speed metal is the generic british influenced heavy metal with faster guitar playing, and drumming than typical. See Abatoir, ADX, Exciter, Acid, Running Wild, Warrant, Iron Angel, Lucifer's Heritage, Avenger, Raven, etc.
Thrash is heavy metal with stronger punk rock attitude, and song writing. The big 4, Exodus, Testament, Sodom, Venom, Warfare, Razor, Dark Angel, Death Angel, D.R.I., Overkill, Whiplash, Nuclear Assault.

There is lots of room for crossover, as these kinds were very popular and the conventional sounds of the early-mid 80s heavy metal bands.
>>

>generalizing that hard
I guess if a band used an A minor chord then any other band that uses A minor is just doing the same shit right :^)
And it doesn't have to literally never done before (though those specific combinations probably haven't been) to be experimental, literally no one thinks that. But fine, if you want really weird shit, here

but of course, people are gonna call it dissoshit and tryhard, so I'm not sure why I'm bothering.
>>63889102
Yeah man, that's what Schoenberg did, he just randomly threw lots of ideas together and made a song out of it, totally. Stravinsky changed the face of music 3 times because he was just messing around and doing random shit like putting every possible progressive sounding instrument into one album, that's it :^). People who experiment don't think, they just do whatever, totally.

black is the most beaten to death metal trope in existence and especially now and frankly it isn't even aggressive, it's the most emo form of metal

this album has aggression, it's just timed. there's more to music than 100% brutality all the time

and whatever 'progressive tropes' they had before are actually effective now. it's the difference between toying with an idea (then) and building with an idea (now)

do you not get that everything is a __ of __? NOTHING is 100% original. In fact it's not possible to make music that is 100%. You are ALWAYS borrowing from someone. That's how genres evolve. You don't just out of the blue think of a totally original idea completely unrelated to anything that's ever been made and tada, it's experimental. No, you borrow from different influences, creating something that is your own, however not 100% original. It's how absolutely any creative process works. Everyone has to learn from someone. Shit doesn't appear from thin air. And you still haven't shown what you think is experimental, unless you just think metal shouldn't be experimental, in which case you're just ignorant.

As an aside, I think caverncore is cancer too, not because it's inherently bad music, but because EVERYONE is doing it, and it's suffocating any sort of variety in both the death and black metal genres. Most of it sounds the same and it's annoying as fuck to review. But I don't think you can just call portal hipster shit because they tried something new.
>inb4 "but they're just a __ of __" or something other indication that they aren't 100% original

Well there's your problem bucko, you think the retards who like metal are smart enough to think on the same level as classical composers. That link you posted isn't anything groundbreaking at all, especially when put in the same post as schoenberg and stravinsky. The first few minutes sounds like the beginning to a 90s death metal album before the actual music starts.
As if the first 45 seconds of

were made into an album.

But before you get your panties in a bunch, that album does sound pretty fun. But fun, not profound.

So, i've been into BM since i was like 14 or so.. anyway, it's been around 10 years, aaaand i've never liked Dimmu Borgir, but i was bored today at work, and a guy walked into the store i work at wearing a Dimmu Borgir tee, so i thought "Hey, let's give it another chance because why the fuck not". So far, the only half-decent (not even good IMO) album, it's For All Tid, the first one (i think). So, does it get any better? Is there any album i should listen that's definitely gonna get me into Dimmu Borgir? I mean, so far i don't like it but still it's a big band, and Hellhammer played with them...

>Pic so i don't get ignored
>>
>>63889408
Well there's doing a different version of someone else's shit and then there's really experimenting. And nothing you've posted so far is really experimental. Sure there's always influenced but experimentation, and avant-garde, comes from trying to break out of genre conventions and influence to something new. So what you're posting is only a little experimental.

the vast majority of heavy music is counter-cultural in the sense that most of it is either anti-capitalist and/or anti-state. the mere act of creating music that isn't mainstream or profitable is counter-cultural and 'left-wing' in some sense.
