Shameless repost of recent cop

dadrock and classical is my jam
>>
A friend of mine told me that it's bad for your turntable if you play lathe cuts. Is this true? I can't find anything about it on Google.
>>
>>63879981
Ask your friend where he gets his facts. If you can't find anything to corroborate it, it's probably anecdotal.

Get used to it, there's a lot of old wives tales permeating records as a hobby.

DONT EVER LET YOUR CABLES TOUCH THE FLOOR
>>
>>63880092

Ah, thanks. I just saw that the lathe just degrades very quickly so I might've misunderstood him.

Some of my favorite records are 30 years old with the sleeves falling apart, cracked and peeling

It's nice to keep them looking good but I care more about the record than the cover
>>
I bought a few random albums from a weird looking dude. One of them was elvis' christmas album which he sold me for 15$. The sleeve is beat up but the media plays nice, and it goes for about $100 on discogs so I considered that a steal. Also got a compilation of like banjo music that I paid $1 for when it goes for like $30 on discogs and the one I got seems to be in notably excellent condition compared to whats available there. Really a good grab on both I think.

Anyone else gonna get the Fishmans- Long Season vinyl release when it comes out next month?

What kind of a stylus does /vinyl/ use? I recently acquired a line contact stylus (Shibata) to replace my elliptical one. This new stylus helped to reduce the sibilance distortion I had on some records.
>>
>>63880614
See the implication here is that
A) you know what you're doing and looking up the correct pressings
B) you checked what condition the records sell for when they sell at those prices
C) that you know anything about how to grade records

and if my almost-a-year at a record store tells me anything, most people can't grade for shit
>>
>>63879330
40-50 should be enough to get a decent one

You preordered the HM1 collection yet senpai

It's completely worthless if it's pressed onto 3 discs only.
Much rather have a box of 7'' vinyls than this.

I've literally never once seen someone with an actual non dronelike collection on these threads. I am convinced that most neo-collectors only do it for the image and thus stay very safe and trendy in what they get, so they can show it off and get approval from others that are the exact same.
>>
>>63882667
You actually think that wasn't always a central element of music?

Should I post a couple of my white labels, I got some that are rare as fuck and go for well over 50 quid.
The problem is that most of them are white labels in battered generic sleeves, so it's not worth showing off.

Only certain lathe cuts degrade quickly. The majority of hobbyist cuts being produced now, the cuts made on polycarbonate/Lexan, have lifespans on par with regular vinyl records.

Lathe cuts and acetates made on vintage (lacquer-coated metal or fibre-core) materials are the ones that degrade quickly, along with some on other non-standard materials (like picnic plates).

>>
>>63882601
Explain yourself.

Why on earth would having multiple tracks on a single record ever be an issue?
>>
>>63883230
2 is fine, when you're out and it's dark and your hands are shaky, you can still get it queued up properly and more importantly you can read the duration off fairly cleanly.

Plus, if most of the tracks are junk, it's better to just bring the ones you care for, which you can't when they're all on the same plate.
>>
>>63883301
Where are you playing your records where those issues are even relevant? If you're playing them in any standard home environment it's not even a concern.
>>
>>63883458
>Where are you playing your records where those issues are even relevant?
Where indeed?
