Gavin Harrison
Johnny Rabb
Thomas Lang
Jojo Mayer
Jack DeJohnette
Dave Weckl
Tony Royster Jr.
Jaki Liebezeit
Max Roach
Gene Krupa

etc. etc. etc.
>>
>>63869629
sure theres nothing wrong with it, but it's spectacular to see Hill do so much with so little given to him.
Perhaps Hill is not better than Carrey or vice versa, rather they have different styles of drumming. I just like Hill's drumming IN ITSELF a little more.

I sincerely hope you don't believe this, because that would be absolutely pathetic
>>
>>63869293
It's insulting to drummers to even call it wank because that implies he's playing anything of value, it's all garbage
>>
>>63869806
I know this is bait but
Jaki plays and thinks like a computer
A lot of the times when I listen to stuff he keeps time with his left foot instead of his right hand, he also perfected the sound of low tom and hi hat on the downbeat with bass drums on the upbeat, his fills do literally whatever he wills all while keeping time better than anyone. He is a machine, those are just a few reasons, hes one of my biggest inspirations

Most people however dont play drums and just parrot what Scaruffi says
>>
>>63870616
The thing about keeping time with the left foot, I have to tell you, literally everyone does at some point

Aphex Twin does the most interesting things with percussive sound outside of Elvin Jones or Rashied Ali. This is a throwaway opinion so consider the comparisons stupid but whatever, I think I'm interesting. Girl/Boy Song. What a triumph there. My community college music prof. said the drums were spastic. I think they're expressive. I don't go to community college anymore. Checkmate.
>>
The greatest drummer of all time and unanimously held so is Tony Williams. Without him, modern drumming wouldn't exist. The fact that no one has mentioned him shows how unfuckingeducated you all are, but I'm never surprised, this board is just as bad as reddit.

You want fast flashy skill that shits all over Zach hill? Mike Mitchell. Mason Guidry, Nick Smith, Rondald Bruner Jr, Thomas Pridgen Eric Moore etc etc

Want lower dynamic shredding? Eric Harland, Kendrick Scott, Antonio Sanchez, Brian Blade etc etc

Want tasty grooves? Chris Dave, Richard Spaven, Benny Greb, Mark Gulliana etc etc etc

This thread is so fucking shit god damn it, it's infuriating.
>>
>>63876912
no idiot, he's fucking primal.
>>
>>63879194
Tony Williams is great, but many of the drummers you listed took inspiration from him and that whole generation and really ran with it. You wanna say he's the "greatest" drummer, sure, ok. But looking purely at drummers without context, without "who influenced who" and all that shit, I would never say he was the best.
>>
>>63879280
Technically untouchable, musically untouchable, conceptually ahead of his time, and you don't look at drummers without looking at the history either, the greatest and considered to be so by nearly all of today's masters and up and coming greats. That alone warrants the best of all time title, not to mention the extensive amount of work he put out with the best damn drumming you'd ever hear.
>>
>>63878997
i have played drums for many years. OP seems to only value technical skill in a drummer so I threw in Gavin and Tony, both of whom are technically far superior

Tony has the worst style out of the 30 some odd drummers that came to prominence from his area in California.
Gavin is really good at using varying dynamics and has solid technique, but I personally find his style boring as fuck. Porcupine tree never did anything for me. I'd rather listen to him play jazz.

Watch and learn faggot

Notice the low level of vocabulary displayed, dropping flams on toms, basic two over three following the bass drum, sparse 16th notes and notice how he doesn't stray from this and repeats his ideas.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yB65_CVbo-0

Now watch someone who's actually a master play. Notice the difference in vocabulary, notice the chops, the displacement, the space, the pocket, everything in a neat package that doesn't involve making stupid faces and flailing arms to put on a show instead of letting your sticks do the talking.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=px1C7h8Z_3c

As someone who enjoys his music and drumming style, but doesn't consider him the "be all end all of drumming"; I don't like Zach for the fact that he's technically very talented but mostly for the part that his drumming technique is so agressive and primal.
It feels like channeling and/or evoking pure feelings and putting "taste" aside so to speak.
It might sound stupid but that's how I experience it and what I enjoy.

I wonder how musicians in general with virtuosic senses of rhythm and time signatures do it. I've been playing the guitar for several years and that kind of rhythmic precision is something I'd really love to achieve some day.

I love Zach Hill as a musician but as a drummer he's so so.
He has boundless energy and some interesting hand foot patterns which transfer to interesting beats but he's lacking in a LOT of departments which can ever make him the GOAT.

Dynamics, technique, timing, he's not even that fast either tbqh.

He'd be in the top 100 of drummers playing at the moment for creativity, output and energy, but nowhere near the top 10 for anything that makes a technically sound drummer.

>>
>>63882088
Well, in the video that OP shared he is fast, but not random at all. If you think that was "random" you're probably mentally handicapped, the video of him practicing is defintely random though.

What makes Zach so good is how fluid and loose his playing is. Also, he posses the greatest right foot of any drummer ever. Seriously, just compare a video of Zach playing by himself to a video of Mike Portnoy (for example) playing by himself. They are polar opposites.

so?

i have studied music for quite a while, just quit the arrogant facade already
>>
>>63882915
Oh cool me too. Doing performance with emphasis on orchestral performance and play plenty more jazz. Where did you study?

How embarrassing. I have never studied music before and I could probably wipe the floor with both of you self-impressed shit heads at the same time.
>>
>>63883065
I highly doubt that, considering I've been playing music since age 3 consistently. Oh yeah, free education baby!
>>
>>63883096
Oh yeah cool guy? Well I've been playing since age 0.5 at least once a day. Looks like I win, bub.

like i said 80 posts ago, its just too subjective to say who "best drummer evar" is
i'm just a fucking pleb teenager but music is still more about how i feel than anything else
i appreciate jazz drummers and traditional rock music drummers for their practiced skill and how they contribute to a song to make it beautiful, and i wouldn't argue if someone listed buddy rich or whoever as one of the top 5 drummers of all time

but zach hill makes me want to kick out a window and do a fucking backflip out of it then run back in and destroy an entire drywall
and he's the only one who makes me feel like that
>>
>>63884120
You need to listen to a lot more drummers. Pleb
>>
>implying Zach hill us actually good.

He's quick but that doesn't make a good drummer.

Bonham is as quick, he just chose not to play like that cause it sounds like shit. So is Buddy Rich, but again, real drummers play to the music, not just seizure out the entire song.

Zach hill is the definition of /mu/. People who have never played drums talking about him as if he's some drum god.

>>
>>63884518
Every song I've heard of his sounds like him trying to solo along to some horrible prog rock song.

Most famous drummers can play like that, it's a specific technique where you fill empty space in the beat with doubles on a triplet beat. It's like a level 1 skill he's just really good at it. It's what buddy rich was a freak at too, that's why it just sounds like he's rolling on everything. Zach hill being ranked as best drummer just shows the ignorance of all the other freak drummers.

it's literally all single strokes. and listen to like every time he hits a cymbal. the strokes themselves are garbage. it literally sounds like someone who's never played drums in their life wished for the ability to play quickly and loudly, had their wish granted, then realized "shit, i have no idea WHAT to play," and just started going. there's nothing to it, it's just bullshit. it's a wall of noise. there's no phrasing, no dynamics, no musicality to speak of. it's garbage.
>>
>>63886512
If you think every drummer needs to fit the same requirements or meet a little checklist you are a massive pleb.
