It's a damn good album in my opinion. Not their highest of highs but it more than deserves to exist. Probably still my AOTYSF even..or dvsn or, depending on how this Deakin album stays with me, maybe that. But damn, its not a fucking 60%, that's ridiculous.

It's even dumber that Slasher Flicks has a lower rating than either. Slasher House was an infinitely better version of CHz and PBVSGR was an infinitely better version of Painting With.

yeah, i guess you're right to an extent. But, if you know what i mean, RYM's 3.00 seems to be like "averagegood," like something a really good local natives album would get..In fact I just looked it up and local natives have two albums at 3.15 and 3.35. If that's their criteria, then painting with getting a 3.00 is ridiculous. and while i agree painting with is definitely not a 4 or any kind of masterpiece, its still, in terms of sound and songwriting, a pretty thrilling, inventive and energetic album. I personally would give it around a 3.5. I'm also a bit of an anco stan so I'd give their best albums 4's and above, so take that with a grain of salt...but regardless, i think that album is doing more in the music world than 3.00.

you sorta have to think of the nature/context of a site and be familiar of its grading curves to see whether it "approves"of something or not. like with p4k, we all know that on an objective grading scale, a 6.5 isn't a bad score - just average. but for pitchfork that's a "pan" and the review will most likely read as largely negative. so yeah, a 3.00 is an average score, but for rym that's a really negative rating.

Centipede is like a 7/10 Painting is like a 5/10 imo both have awful cluttered production but Centipede at least has good songwriting.

i like the rymers on /mu/ because they have built autistic mental models of quality descriptors and number ranges on top of a system that is totally arbitrary.
