The weak links are Panda and Geo on that album. The hocketing is bad, yeah, but so are the ~zany sound effects and out of place samples that seem forced.
At least Pandas songs were good on CHz (inb4 Rosie Oh hate) and his drumming on that tour and album was amazing. The inundation of effects was one of the issues with CHz. Geo fucked up there imo

I don't get why everyone is going crazy over Deak arm. Sleep Cycle is great, but it's 5 songs. If you add Wide Eyed and Country report that's 7 songs.
Doesn't even beat Avey and Panda's work on Sung Tongs and Spirit or the good tracks on Danse or MPP. Avey does most of the guitar work on SJ (going by the live shows and watching his guitar parts) and all of it on HCTI (confirmed in CA) - Deaks major contribution to the band has mostly been on CS and Feels, which is great, but he's still behind Avey and Panda in importance even after the disaster of PW.

On PW? Yes.
Panda has done some amazing stuff and I'm convinced he'll go down as one of the most important artists of the 00's but PBVGR and his work on PW show that he's losing his touch.
Avey is still on point with his songwriting, though no longer at his best, but Panda just seems to be going through the motions for the time being

I don't really see any of them as being a weak link, especially not Panda. Panda has contributed amazing stuff to AC and has an almost flawless solo career, Avey is the leader of AC and his solo stuff is very underrated (Slasher Flicks is a jam), Deakin is now a solo artist with real stuff and hopefully will contribute more to AC once he returns, and Geo adds an awesome special element and doesn't seem to want to step out on his own, which is fine. Honestly it's not even gimmicky if you just interpret it as an alternative style of singing rather than an effect.
People are also treating hocketing as if it's a permanent part of Animal Collective's sound, when it was really an idea exclusive to Painting With's concept (that the songs seemed to be co-written equally).
