Reposting from last thread.

Recommendations on classical/nylon guitar brands? I'm not looking for performance level guitars, just one that's cheap ($~100) and good enough for practice. Thanks.

just see what you can find in your area and try before you buy
if youre going for so cheap its also always better to buy second hand

I don't think it's worth the trouble/cost to put them all on a board when I'm just going to keep tearing it down to put a small gig board together.

Went to the largest guitar store in my area, played some.

This Gibson was incredible, nice weight, really smooth neck, good fret and string setup and a nice, but not too small body. Felt really good, extremely playable.

The Jazzmaster I played was okay, but the neck felt too thick and the body felt unbalanced.

I also tried some acoustics, a Yamaha whose name I don't remember, and these telecaster/acoustic hybrids. Actually a nice guitar for the money, very lightweight, not too loud, just loud enough so you don't need an acoustic amp.

How was your last store visit, /gg/?
>>
>>63834135

I was in a prog metal band with a couple guys I knew from high school. The two of them started the band and I came in later, eventually we kicked out the bassist because we were trying to take things more seriously and he was more into college/current gf at the time. I don't really talk to him anymore but we ended up sort of being friends again after that, but then proceeded to have a second sort of falling out. Basically because he's a little bitch, he took it super personally when we kicked him out and now is practically married to some bitch from high school and doesn't even play music
>>
>>63835098

Mic into a tube amp, is that bad for the amp?

For example, on a DRRi, plugging a mic into the clean channel and a guitar into the Vibrato channel. Could that do any damage to the amp? Or even a guitar in each channel?

>>
>>63837407
it's not massive as in scale difference, e.g. a strandberg feels way more fanned (not in a bad way IMO), it's the placement of the fan that stretches your left hand in the lower registers for certain fingerings on chords

What I gathered from the pawn shop series amps is Fender was making a play on all their old practice amps that have sky rocketed in collector's value. I guess this is pretty much the definition of playing to a gimmick rather than a niche market.

None of these amps are expensive. I think all are Chinese made. They're all really simple platform amps.

They're ok and would be fine for a modder. I wouldn't put them against the more staple amps Devilles/hot rode, ACs, Egnators, pv classics.

Holy shit positions and shapes are the most retarded thing ever and I irrationally hate everyone who speaks praise of them. And it's even fucking worse if you add in any kind of mention of the pentatonic, what's the deal with all these people learning how to mindlessly play in boxes ?

I'm about to leave for a year and won't be seeing my guitar tho. I hope I can pick up another cheap one while I'm gone and keep practicing.

I just started over christmas
i love how cute my guitar is tho
>>
>>63838007
I just mean people who play the pentatonic up and down like every other goody-two shoes, in the same fucking "position".
Unstructured improvising can be shit if you delve too much into atonal stuff but at least get out of these shapes and boxes and just play your fretboard like you own it, stop caring so much about shapes and whether that note you want is in it or not.

>>63838068
If it's a bullet strat, you'll have no trouble finding another one and getting used to it. At least that's the practical side of cheap guitars, once you played on one for a while, you can play with everything
>>
>>63838130
yeah I'm not worried about that, glad I got a cheap one as my first, the strings on it are already starting to get fucked up from sweat. When I get back/another guitar I'm getting string cleaning set. I have a spare pair of strings though.

Oh yeah and I never thought playing guitar would be this therapeutic. I love playing, like it's seriously addicting, I've been doing it every day almost for the past three months.
>>
>>63838130
Oh yeah I should add that three notes per string is dumb, people should learn 5/6 per string, that way you've got your three or four notes that are right under your fingers, and you've got some notes left to slide upon or bend, it's far better for expressing yourself.

>>63838205
welcome to the boat, I've been doing that for almost two years and it's practically made me drop videogames along the way
>>
>>63837951
It comes from stringed instruments like violin. You need to plant your thumb to be able to accurately play from muscle memory. Knowing how to play from positions can help you hypothetically if you are playing something very fast, but I'm sure that depends on the person. Knowing shapes is mostly good for improv. A lot of stuff doesn't make sense unless you are into blues or jazz improv.

Personally I'm more into composition, so I will generally plan what I want to play out ahead of time or (try to) play by ear.

>>
>>63838312
I quit video games a while back... It's been about a year since I've played anything. I'm not sure if it's really helped me. I still can't get my shit together when it comes to basic shit. I don't know what the fuck is wrong with me. I just go to work, play guitar, and sleep. At the moment my life seems kinda shallow compared to when I was into video games, despite "muh creativity". I generally played games that let you be a bit creative/strategic like dota and counter-strike though.
>>
>>63838261
But violin is fretless, learning where to put your fingers to get the right intonation is crucial as opposed to a guitar where you could put your foot on the fretboard and still get the right note.
As for improv, you're going to need to find the note you want to play anyway, so why bother with so many shapes that won't work half the time ?
Plus, learning where to place notes will make different chord voicings far easier to find.

Is it just me or does a Natural finish make PRS guitars not look gaudy. I usually think they look way over the top but I wouldn't mind owning this.
>>
>>63838828
I wanted to celebrate this year, everything is going well (got in doctorate school) and wanted a gold guitar. I didn't elaborate more because I was looking for the first thing that came to people's minds. But I like fender enough, but I think it'd look weird with the maple neck. I'm good with Gibson to just not Les Paul. I want solid body, and I play mostly stoner rock (qotsa, etc)

Then your options for buying a guitar are very different from those available to native English-speakers. We likely can't help very much.

Generally Squier and Epiphone make cheap entry-level electrics that are pretty decent.

Its the fucking striped veneers that make them look so gaudy to me. Natural finish doesn't help much

Only way I'd buy one is if it were a plaintop.

>>63838901
I still recommend playing on acoustic for a longer time, until you actually get good
>>
>>63838962
I'll never understand the appeal of flame-top. It makes it look very '80s, like fucking zebra-print. I'd be all over a nice PRS burl though.
>>
>>63839109
same dude

which is why the gibson 2016 les paul lineup annoys me so much. They completely ditched plaintops in favour of flame. Just feels so cheap in comparison.
>>
>>63839097
caps on plain guitars makes me sad. I guess if all they make is capped guitars it makes sense. I guess a carved top might necessitate it as well. IDK.
>>
Do pro musicians ever mess up during live performances? I've played 3 shows and me and my bandmates would maybe mess up timing once or twice throughout the set, but just curious if there's footage of big name bands goofing up majorly on stage. I'm not talking a note or two, or a 2 second pause to get back on track...
>>
Finally found some pics. This is the before.

>>63839109
The appeal of flamed and quilted tops is to stain them and do bursts. Personally I like them.

Shows quality and craftsmanship. Whereas a black paint job on a $1,600 Music Man looks just as good as a $99 Strat copy, from far away. Candy Apple Red? Or a deep blue? Yeah.... those colors can be classy, but still dull and boring like black.

I always disliked flame maple tops, but only because I've seen so many cheap veneers over the years. I can see the appeal of a thick maple top where you can see the depth (not covered with binding like Gibsons)

Oh god I'm turning into a Blues Lawyer.
>>
>>63839269
Well, I sanded the headstock on purpose because I wanted it to be like the original Frankie.

But then again, I added a neck humbucker and a toggle switch that the original didn't have. Might as well put my name on the headstock.

>>
>>63839237

Paint jobs on higher quality guitars look far better and can still make a guitar look high quality and well made.

Flame tops show craftmanship, but that doesn't excuse their tacky looks. IMO at least

I don't really like strats, yet I have two because they're cheap and I can mod them however I want.

When I was 15 I had to kick out my band's bassist, who happened to be my best friend. He could never remember how to play his parts, couldn't tune his bass, and missed most of our practices. 14 years later and we're best friends. The hard feelings didn't last, but he did cry when we broke the news. He never did learn how to play bass properly. He was a singer in a hardcore band for a while, now he's a DJ.

What do you call a beautiful woman on a bassist's arm?
A tattoo.
The guitarist hears screaming and yelling, runs into the rehearsal room and finds the bass player and the drummer fighting. He calms them down enough to find out what's going on and the bass player says "He turned one of my tuning machines and made the bass out of tune!!"
The guitarist asks "Well, why don't you just retune it?"

Ok, so when I was younger I always thought bigger speakers = more bass

yadda yadda quality speakers and such... Why are 12"s the guitar common size? Not common, but the monopoly. Bass, you got 10" and 15". Guitar... 12". And some odd ball 6, 8, and 10's, and PA 18" monsters.

Also, if tiny centimenter wide headphone speakers can make deep ass bass, why couldn't a 3" speaker? I know it wouldn't be room-filling, but just for a bedroom, I don't see why not. Same for car-audio. They make compact subs that hit hard. CHest pounding hard.

The goal of guitar and bass speaker isn't to give a flat EQ but rather something that's already sort of defined.
It's also important to note that having bass isn't the same as having precise bass, a lot of cheap headphones will drown you in bass but won't have any clarity to it.

It's a mod platform. Apart from the neck being a bit flimsy it's pretty awesome now. It'll need a new nut eventually, but for now it plays like a dream. Though if a beginner actually played it they'd probably never be in tune due to the neck whip. I'm thinking of converting it to short scale but I'd miss the headstock so much.
>>
>>63840386
any size speaker can have more bass or less, as you say. To put it simply, guitar and bass speakers are shitty as hell. That gives the tone some character. In general a guitar cabinet will always give you less definition. I'm a big proponent of using high definition speakers, and just getting the tone you want out of digital effects. Trying to sell my old cab at the moment.
>>
>>63838777
This is such bullshit advice. Sure, it works if the student is interested in learning acoustic songs, but starting some kid who wants to play rock/metal/etc on an acoustic is only going to make him not want to play and more likely to give up
>>
>>63840716
nah, just play clean for a while. Personally, I started on acoustic, and I regret it a bit. I enjoy the limitations and tone of an acoustic but it'll teach you bad habits when it comes to electric. Acoustic may be physically a bit shit's pretty harder to play but electric is much harder technically.
>>
>>63840838
no, it'll help him learn fundamentals so he's not complete crap when he switches over and at least has some knowledge on how to play instead of just knowing how to shred, tap and do pinch harmonics

Of course its possible to learn how to play while starting on electric, but we all know how that ends up
>>
>>63840958

>Of course its possible to learn how to play while starting on electric, but we all know how that ends up

>>
>>63840958
>learning how to play when all you wanna do is wank
>>
>>63840838
This. The number one priority for anybody during the first few months of playing should be having fun. Number two should be posture.

After the first few months is when habits really start to take root, and serious study begins to reward you. Not to mention, studying won't be any fun at all if you can't apply it to what you already know, like your cowboy chords and pixies covers.
