Honestly believe he can outplay anyone else. Can tackle multiple genres like a chameleon and has pushed the instrument far beyond any other player
>>63811228
>plays the same solos over and over
>the same scale over and over
>all his music sounds the same
>literally made a career of playing the same thing
>>63811354
I don't agree
Mark Knopfler. Crazy fingerpicking and musicianship (ability to hold back)
the best
>>63811462
youre gonna get a bunch of dumb ass memers calling you a dad for posting him, but thats just to be expected. Page was fantastic.
>>63811158
>>63811347
literally who?
"Guitar god" is the lamest term on the planet. That being said:
>Alex Lifeson
>Michael Schenker
>Syu
>Brian May
inb4 AVENGE SEVENFOLD WORS BAND IM THE BIGGEST MUSIC FAN ON THE WEB ON THE WEB IM THE BIGGEST MUSIC FAN ON THE WEB
also Joe Satriani and Omar Rodriguez
Aforementioned guitarists aren't the most wanking of guitarists but they have some unique writing styles and definitely show mastery of a plethora of skills and facets of being good guitarists. Not a big fan of their work, but still think they're great as guitarists.
Rory above all others
>>63811604
Omar can jam really well, his solos are godly.

snoozeville contrarian choice
>>63811693
>Contrarian
Listen to There and Back or Wired. He doesn't get the appreciation he deserves.
>>63811571
Fred Frith. Highly recommend checking him out. The band Henry Cow is what he is most known for but he has put out and been on hundred of albums spanning all genres while staying on the forefront of guitar playing. His free improv is as incredible and his composed work

yes he does
best guitarist and rapper ever
>>63811900
this
>>63811893
I don't know. Every time I hear or see people list off the Yardbirds guitarists (Minus Topham), he always comes last.
>>63812009
every time you ever see anyone mention the "greatest guitarists ever" he is always on the list.
>>63811347
Frith is GOAT
>>63812058
Yeah, roughly 10 spaces below Clapton and Page. I just think it's insane.
>>63812103
marginal difference for a more than marginal difference in greatness. clapton and page's influence in rock is just too ubiquitous and monolithic to warrant being considered equal to beck.
>>63812103
also if you google "greatest guitar players" google's algorithms place beck at 6 to clapton and page's 2 and 3. a lot different from roughly 10.
>>63812181
Oh come on. I know Page and Clapton are great (LZ II and Unplugged are masterpieces) but you can't actually say they aren't at least equal? More people were inspired by the other two, maybe, but his playing is just so wonderful and unique in comparison.
>>63812236
It was a rough estimate at best and I interpreted you saying "anyone" to be a single person that I could pick off the street, not a google survey. Hell, chances are if I picked a guy off the street they wouldn't know Beck.
>>63811802
So underrated as a guitarist.
>Tfw nobody knows your face.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvouiDJSTUE
And a bass god in there too.
>>63812530
his solo in Time is the best Floyd solo ever
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6yWZUv9QJA
Mike motherfucking Bloomfield
My favorite anyway.
>>63811670
Too bad Ritchie was a fucking cunt of massive proportions though.
Prevents him from ever being considered a "god"
>>63812878
Well, perhaps the guitar devil.
here he shares some thoughts on page and beck

>"It’s funny. There’s two types of guitarists. Like Blackmore, I used to hate, because I met him once at the Rainbow with John Bonham when we were just playing clubs. You know, I grew up on him too, and I ran over and said hello, and they both just looked at me and said, “Who are you? Fuck off.” And it pissed me off. And to this day I remember that. And then just recently Rainbow played the Long Beach Arena. I went down there. This is right after I won Best Guitaristist [in the Guitar Player Readers Poll], which I’m real honored – makes me feel good. I went down there, in a way, with a vengeance, you know. I just felt like saying, “Hey, motherfucker, remember me? About three years ago, when you treated me like shit?” But I didn’t. I just said hello, and he knew me, I guess just through records and radio, and he complimented me." - EVH
I love reading about all the little disputes and arguments Blackmore got in over the years.
>>63811799
the gritty thick as fuck guitar tone of Siamese Dream and the starry, dreamy psych one of Gish make me cum
>>63811399
Dire Straits always get shat on, but they have some real bangers
>>63813264
Blackmore should've sent him by ferry to Iceland
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQW_DFADO6I
guitars are for plebs
>>63812636
Nah the solo at the end of Comfortably Numb is the best guitar solo ever, let alone the best Floyd solo.
>>63813264
I'd tell that little cunt EVH to fuck off too

also he worked on motherfucking Jurassic Park and did stop motion for TOOL's music videos
pretty damn talented
but technical guitar wise Thurston Moore + Lee Ranaldo
>>63813647
>>63813651

>>63811702
My nigga
Ten Years After is underrated on /mu/
>>63811702
Totally forgot about him. His performance of I'm Goiing Home at Woodstock was fucking crazy
https://youtu.be/qXy60LS2Kas?t=11m13s
this might be my favorite solo of all time.
joe pass.
Highly underrated.
>>63811439
>>63814747
>>63814911
Mick Taylor is also criminally underrated.
Ritchie Blackmore is an undisputable guitar god.
By why didn't he ever come to be as big and renown as Page and Handrix?
>>63814996
he said "fuck off" to commercially successful Deep Purple, his own artistic creation, and founded Rainbow with a bunch of (then) nobodies
and much later, he said "fuck off" to rock in general and embraced Renaissance music.
Perhaps he's just too based for pop culture.
>>63814941
He is amongst guitar players, since he's basically considered one of (If not the) first shredders and he basically laid the entire foundation for neo-classical metal, alongside Uli Jon Roth.
In terms of renown amongst people at large, though? Well, he didn't die young like Hendrix and he wasn't a hippie, so there's that.
Page would probably simply be down to the fact that Purple never cracked the States like Zeppelin managed to (Though they were just as popular in Europe and Asia in their respective heydays). Plus Blackmore's bizarre and highly aggressive personality pissed off a lot of prominent American rock journalists of the time (Jann Wenner completely loathed Blackmore on a personal level), which probably didn't help in the long run.
>>63815369
Ooops, sorry. That's in response to >>63814996
>>63813625
underrated
>>63809760
The song Bat Country is what got me into playing guitar. I don't think Gates is a guitar god, though.
>>63809760
Wish he could still play.
>>63816008
I wouldn't call him a guitar god, but he definitely has a lot of talent that he just never displays, beyond just sweep picking and runs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzOV_FBVORk
I found this improv a while ago and I'd really be interested in what the guy would do as a solo musician, uninhibited by metal standards and restraints. The guy is being way held back by Avenged Sevenfold.
>>63816008
He just has a distinct sound that I really like. That sort of whiny sound he's got with the Invader pickups just sounds really good
>>63816101
That was actually really cool and I really liked it.
>>63816101
I always really like the jazzy/flamenco sounding part of the song Sidewinder. I know gates studied jazz guitar, I agree that it would be nice to hear him make music outside of A7X.
Not the best, but I always like his guitar work with REM. Pretty underrated imo.
>>63811399
He is THE guitar god
>>63811802
/nods. How could I forget my gateway to speed/thrash metal
