See senpai, the reason why you're having issues is because that's not the same kind of piano you're using. More like Rhodes piano or organ. I'm going to hook you up with a Soundfont.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/581w1ld5orss3pm/jRhodes3b-stereo-aut%20EDIT.sf2?dl=0

Use the loudest velocities you can on the low keys and you'll get the growl.

I've been experimenting in fl studio for the past couple weeks trying to make some ambient for fun in between classes, but I've run into a bit of a hurdle. I'm not really sure how Tim Hecker or guys like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW2x7jjUPRs&list=PLKtI6DyKnYmNSmdMh8rUZBpxtkf_lKMv4
make this like... Glass sound? It's this sort of cold filling silence kind of sound, not really sure how to describe it. From what I read on wikipedia, Hecker made his using like slowed down organ sounds he recorded or something. Is there any way to make it with synths because it doesn't make sense that every ambient artist has their own pipe organ they play with.
>>
>>63801660
>Is there any way to make it with synths because it doesn't make sense that every ambient artist has their own pipe organ they play with.
you could just use a church organ emulation, bounce to audio and stretch the audio.

Look at a piece of software called SPEAR. it's great for infinity stretching sounds without degradation purely because it analyses the sound and then recreates it with frequencies. you can change and cut each frequency. SPEAR makes these kinds of sounds.
>>
>>63801714
Oh okay sweet, I'll play around with it. Happen to have any recommendations for church organ emulation too?

You either go in to the libraries tab > add library if it's a compatible library,

or you go into files tab and search where the NKI files are for your nord stage, right click the blank screen on the right to bring up the quickload menu and drag the NKI file into the quickload menu for later use.

I got the VC2A, VC76 and VC160 compressors with Komplete 10 and was wondering how they work, what are their attack and release times? I get that 2A is variable, but generally, does it clench down on transients or does it enhance them? What about the others?
>>
>>63805397
And let's just take the VC76 as another example. NI's website says they "work well on drums, vocals and stereo limiting". Apparently it has a very fast attack, so it compresses the transients... why would it be good for drums then? From what I understand, it's generally in your interest to preserve the transients in rhythm instruments. I'm a bit confused. There seem to be information that contradicts my beginner notion of "two categories of compression: transient-enhancer and leveler".

Well I didn't go down the same route as him. I did sound design/Foley.

It's nothing like SPEAR but there's a very unusual but cool plugin called "crazy Ivan". It's my go to to create warping or like "sci fi" sounds or pulses. Also check out one called "Buff Rice". It's kind of shit and I never use it but it can make some nice sounds.

Fracture By GlitchMachines is great for robotic or unusual sounds. Used that a bunch
>>
>>63799898
It's hard to tell how to get it exactly, because we don't know what kind of processing happened on the mix and the master (or at least I don't). But, as far as getting that sort of techno pluck sound, you're gonna want to use your filter envelope, starting partially open and decaying closed quickly. Sounds like it's probably some combination of square waves and possibly sine waves to give it more low end. Also, the sound has a bit of a punch at the beginning which can be achieved using the pitch envelope. There's some delay on it as well.

>>
>>63801485

>>
>>63805481

Compressors, when used with percussion, tend to be used not to enhance transients as such, but to balance them with the decay portion of the sound (that's kinda what you meant though, I get it), a fast attack will bring the transient part of the drum sound down in level probably quite sharply and will enhance the decay too (since you can adjust gain reduction to be less as the decay, er...decays) and if it's a really fast attack it'll do this without softening the attack of the percussion hit - we usually allow transients through because compressors traditionally do not react quickly enough to control them, they sort of "round" the peak and it sounds unnatural but if we had a fast enough attack this effect would be less noticeable.

We'd then have more control over the transient/decay balance and since the decay carries a lot of the more of the resonance of the percussion sound we would have a tonal tool, rather than simply a dynamics control.

It's ok, I'd suggest doing something with that crash cymbal though, it sounds like a really bad library sound, some variation on the velocity and maybe some effects and eqing would help push it into the background a bit, also, maybe using 2 or three samples in stead of just one

leave it like that, add lo-fi filters, make it sound like Ariel Pink.

>>
>>63817874
Question.

I would like to get a program that's versatile (can make virtually any track) and completely intuitive (don't have to use any physical instruments.)

I was looking into FL Studio but the plugins and VSTs come up to around $700, which I just can't afford.
>>
>>63817800
If you're planning on later recording shit onto what you made, ableton is great for that. It comes with built in tutorials, proffesionals have made tens of thousands of videos.

It will help you make loops and arrange them into songs, which you can then record tracks into easily. Not to mention it comes with some pretty versatile vsts.

There's definitely no cracked versions of Live 9 that you can download and install pretty easily from tpb. Nope. Not at all.
>>
>>63817976
I'm a bit confused would ableton be an all in one DAW like I mentioned before.

I don't understand the context you're speaking of record in. Do you mean I can make a bassline in ableton and record with an actual instrument later on?

I kinda wanted a DAW that would work as an all-in-one.

For example, I would be able to make a Trap track with VSTs and samples in the DAW and I could do the same in any other genre of music.
>>
>>63818098
yes, you can make a bassline with midi, then record an audio one later on, with a real bass.

You can make anything in midi. You can record audio into it. There are two types of tracks in ableton, audio or midi.

Yes, you can make whatever in ableton. There is a built in sampler so whatever samples you have, you can use. I make all sorts of different music. There are built in instruments of all types, from flutes to cellos to trance leads.

You can do anything in ableton, it's just a matter of learning it and getting the right vsts if there's something you want it doesn't have.

I have 1500 hours in and I definitely don't know it all. Get to work, anon.
>>
>>63818254
that was phrased horribly, but hopefully you get what I meant. Kinda drunk atm
>>
So, what do I do?

Every time I download a software all the switches and shit are so daunting I just end up uninstalling it.
I don't have enough money to hire a producer though (even if I could find one).
I'm a rapper btw.
>>
>>63818600
start with the tutorial videos. If there are none built in, find them on the internet. There is a beginners guide for every major daw.

And really, if you can't find a way to get your ideas down, how are you getting anywhere?

The other option is to just buy premade beats from websites. There are a bunch that freelance producers make.
>>
>>63818937
>The other option is to just buy premade beats from websites. There are a bunch that freelance producers make.
I look through websites, but I think what I want is way too specific to use random beats.
Are there any programs you would recommend? Hopefully something easy to access, I always find getting a keygen difficult.

I appreciate your true and utter zeal. I know a lot of people who are intuitives love fruity loops because you can just fuck around and come out with something cool at a certain point.

I love ableton because I am an analytical kind of person. Build it from the ground up, micromanaging, kind of musician. But really, the easiest, most user friendly DAW, is garage band.

I didn't have to get a keygen with ableton. tpb has you covered if you can follow directions.

So I will really appreciate it if some of you guys can help me.

I mean how do I make stuff like those?

speaking of course more about the techincal side of stuff. Like how can I get all those sounds he's using? what software and stuff. Also what's the best way to learn it? Like I said before i'll really appreciate your help.

Also what are some other modern artists like Flylo that this really spacey rhythmic music using electronic setup?
>>
man I on recommendation of a lot of people I just started messing with Ableton a few days ago but it's missing some basic functionality that you'd expect a DAW to have:

1. Auto-save? Like seriously? That's one of the first things that should've been on there.
2. 32bit plugin support on 64bit Ableton. All my 32 bit plugins work fine on my 64bit FL Studio, why the hell do you need to download a separate program to get them to work on Ableton?
3. What the fuck no vst3 support? It's like they're deliberately trying to fuck people over. I'd now have to re-install like 20 vsts and re-authorize them (which is a pain) because Ableton requires vst2.

I might just go back to FL Studio, it's much better.

And I haven't even started with the interface, jesus. While the layout is fine, it's just ugly as fuck.
>>
Why are Kontakt samples so big?
I was searching for some orchestral VSTs but seems that for getting anything decent I'd have to have a huge library of samples like Spitfire's Albion and the likes? Is there nothing lighter?
How do you menage your sounds and projects in relation to disk space?
>>
>>63826133
its all sampling my man, welcome to a long and often thankless journey, but when you get your head round it, it gets easier. please be aware you will suck for months possibly years though. all you need right now is a computer and a DAW pretty much all edit audio and have in built samplers etc. try stuff out on there and if you want to get some hardware think about a MPC, Maschine or sp-404 etc. essentially just real versions of your DAW's samplers.

but yeh the main thing to bear in mind is it will take along time to get your head round and flylo is the kind of guy who adds an awful lot of extra textures and sounds to his beats, more so than a lot of hip-hop producers, but definitely just start out by playing with samples, chopping them up, rearranging them thinking how you can manipulate them and use them creatively etc.
>>
>>63827265
Excuse my retardation but what exactlay is a DAW? And do I have make in built samplers?

Difference between VSTs and sampler + sample tanks: one processes the sound of an instrument manipulating the pitch while the other has a recording for every single note of an instrument? Is this right?
>>
>>63828634
No, Vsts can be samplers or synths or effects. A synth generates every note based on the settings you enter, a sampler with a sample library like kontakt would have recordings of every note at different velocities and articulations depending on the library.

best mic for vocals/sampling objects around the house for ~200 dollars?
>>
>>63830509
If you already have a phantom power source, get the AT2020. Not a fantastic mic, but it does what it says on the box, and gets the job done. I have a pair I use as "beaters". If that's too cheap for you, then I recommend researching mics yourself, because there's a shitload of mics around $200.

Pretty cheap is the
rode nt1a
At2020 is okay but nothing special. Very brittle
Low level sontronics microphones are great.
Behringer if you're really saving pennies

I'm just looking to buy a Helios soon. About £600 though. Used one on some vocal work and it was pretty smooth

Synth/VST question here

Are there any free VSTs available that are actually decent? Or would I be better off just shelling out a little bit of dosh for a synthesizer?

Space is an issue at the moment and I use Ableton if that matters any.

And now you know why people call it Unableton.

>Why are Kontakt samples so big?
Because they're high quality and there's a lot of them.

pretty dope stuff, good stuff

Don't let anyone tell you presets are bad. Presets are great, of course you alter the shit out of them, but they're there to get a base sound and get rid of the hassle of doing it all yourself when it's right there.

Again, using base presets will prob yield shit results, but they're a good base point.
