Van Halen is actually one of my favorites. I don't know, I always see these threads as jokes basically. Post the best guitarists and say that you don't understand how anyone could think there were good.
How can you post seriously in a thread that has Hendrix as a "Meme Guitarist" as its subject ?That's the way I see most boards actually, otherwise I couldn't stand it. Not taking anything seriously in here is healthier than upvotes sites or holier-than-thou forums. It's pretty funny actually, desanctifying everything like that.

I hate this popular misconception. The guitar's neck being upside down was purely cosmetic as an imitation of Albert King (who genuinely did play an upside down guitar).
>>

>>
>>63786395

lel
>>
>>63786468

Yeah, everyone who doesn't know shit about guitar thinks Santana is a god. He copped his whole early style from Peter Green and is nothing more than a pentatonic wanker now.
>>
Slash definitely takes the cake here. Mediocre band, mediocre pentatonic bullshit...
Think about all the wannabe guitarists you've seen who owned a Les Paul and warmed up before their gigs by playing the Sweet Child O' Mine riff.

Also, Hendrix's importance goes far beyond his 'meme antics' and playing technique. His tone was a huge deal in the 60's, the way he used his entire rig was groundbreaking (think wah pedals, the way he put feedback to a use...). I get that a lot of people think he was nothing more than a mere performer, but those people actually consider technique the only criteria for interesting instrumentists. If that was the case, Malmsteen wouldn't be such a boring act.

its the nature of music he plays, blues pretty much equals playing those same scales, though I admit there are more interesting ways of doing it, still its like complaining about the one of those chillwave or retrowave guys because they use those synths and that kind of melodies, its integral to the style of music

Alright niggers, since none of you actually play guitar, let me break it down for you.

Jimi Hendrix wasn't that great, technically. Nigga couldn't play in tune half the time. What he was was innovative. He did stuff that no one was doing at the time and people are still doing it today. Greatest guitarist ever? No. Greatest innovator? Probably.

Jimmy Page played the same scales and solos in all his songs. The pentatonic minor scales. What made him so special is the songs. Led Zeppelin just made some damn good songs, songs that are instantly recognizable and still played and listened to today. For that reason he's so famous and considered so good. The fact that he's basically done fuck all since LZ ended tells you that.

Angus Young wasn't good. He just wasn't. He played the same few power chords, piss easy solos, and simple riffs. But that's what fit the music and made them popular. He's remembered for writing these iconic songs, not for actual playing ability.

Kurt Cobain probably couldn't even tune his damn guitar. He really only got famous for his death and has achieved legend status posthumously like so often happens. There was nothing even remotely good about him as a guitarist.

All the people in the Beatles were mediocre as fuck at their instruments. They wrote stupid simple songs for the masses, and the masses ate that shit right up. It made them rich, they did drugs, and they wrote more stupid songs while they were on drugs. Rinse and repeat.

Have you listened to blues and rock music before Hendrix came along? He basically invented virtuoso rock guitar without even being that virtuoso. He impressed people with an actual grounding in classical guitar like Robert Fripp (Yngwie Malmsteen couldn't touch most professional classically trained guitarists on acoustic, of which there are tens of thousands)

If you ever played or studied any of Hendrix's shit you would know he's a respectable musician at the very least. That's more than a lot of classic rock guitarists could do and especially more than the self-taught /mu/guitarbabbies could.

There we go, that's better. The edge is overrated as a guitarist. Overrated is a strong word though, he's not usually rated. Sure he mix's pedals for a very unique sound, but there's much much more to guitar than tone.

Might as well line him up with the guitar techs, not guitarists. It was an insult to guitarists everywhere putting him it might get loud. You could see in it whenever the guys would jam, Jimmy page and Jack White were glaring at him, just like entire audience.

Imagine if Tom Morello was in it instead.

Every U2 song literally sounds the same you faggot. Just play two notes over a delay.

Miscommunication. He played with the pick in his teeth. Which is still incredibly difficult. Also, Jimi showed Eric Clapton up on stage playing a song that Eric thought was hard whilst playing with his teeth and having sex with the guitar he was playing. I'm pretty sure that's when Eric was in the Yard birds, there's a clip from a documentary somewhere.

That's what everyone's playing is after the person that invented the style plays. He loved B.B. King. I play blues lead, so, I pull from Jack White, Robert Johnson, Clapton, King and it sounds like a mish-mash of those that I made into my own thing.

A true meme guitarist

This >>63791887. You joke, but he made that delay pedal his bitch and he was the only player to make that kind of use of delay, echo and harmonics to get a floaty sound.
>>
this thread is so embarrassing, holy shit

it's nothing but >lol bro, he can't even SHRED xD
>>
>>63792718
If you can't play more than barre chords and simple pentatonic scales, you're not worth shit as a guitarist.
>>
>>63792277
Frank Zappa is a freak on the guitar. Seriously?
>>
>>63792657
Maybe if I heard him in his day he would have sounded more original and I simply lack context but to me he really doesn't sound as unique as Duane Allman, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Freddie King, Derek Trucks or even SRV
>>
>>63792380
Jeff was always the better guitarist anyway. Kerry got all the attention, while Jeff chilled in the back and wrote the good songs
>>
>>63792759
Basically this.

There's a million guitarists playing the same simple shit over and over and everyone rides their nuts for it, and some get really famous doing it. But it doesn't mean they're actually decent guitarists.

The Beatles didn't just write pop songs. They literally influenced almost every modern act following Sgt. pepper. Yeah the songs were simple but no one else was doing it like they were. No one else was writing those melodies or had those arrangements. Fuck tracing their Musial influence would be like tracing Ghengis Khan's lineage to today
>>
>>63794700
Doesn't mean they were any good to listen to. Listening to the Beatles is like getting teeth pulled

>Implying the influence was for the better
>Implying they weren't just a commercially viable act
Those songs and melodies were radio friendly and could be sold to anyone

I think he's a little overrated, since he died young. But if you go listen to songs like Machine Gun, you will see that he was a great guitar player. Had an interesting technique that influenced others around him. I don't necessarily agree with this, but I know people that consider him the father of metal music (not that he played metal, but his style and guitar tone directly led to metal music.)

>Tom Morello
He's not horrible, but guitar hero fags used to hype him up far too often. Too many wacky pedal effects, not enough substance for me.
>>
>>63786630
Fucking Slash. That's usually the first one that comes my mind, when talking about overrated guitarists.

What's so great about Greg Ginn, or The Great Kat?

he's mostly famous because he learned to play the guitar upside down

I respect your opinion, but I don't understand it at all. I'm the exact opposite. I could listen to Dream Theater all day (even though it's melodramatic and over the top), but I get sick of The Ramones simple music after a couple of songs. That's life, I guess.

>>
>>63795991
There's a reason they're acclaimed anon. And it's not because they were in popular groups.

If you can't understand why I say that, don't bother responding.
>>
>>63787021
This is true, but songwriting is a pretty important part of playing an instrument. If you can't put all your technical mastery together to write a decent song, you're not much of a guitarist.
>>
>>63785538
man jimi jam was the biggest innovator of the electric guitar by far. If you actually listen to him, his control of the guitars sound is fucking insanity. To this day no one can match him.
