Honestly, they are. Many of the first 8 albums are almost universally considered some of the greatest albums of the 80's and early 90's. Even people who aren't huge REM fans usually accept their prominence as one of the most influential bands of the late 20th c., and their renown usually focuses on their early work.

Why do most great bands end up putting out bad albums? It's really depressing. Every great band I can think of - Animal Collective, Mercury Rev, Pink Floyd, etcetera - went through periods of putting out really great albums and then went to shit. Why does this always happen? The only instance I can think of where this didn't happen is Talk Talk.
