I think it's just practising A LOT.
>>
what's better at polyphonic pitch shitfting - Whammy V or EHX Pitch Fork?
I am currently using a Whammy V, and get kinda annoyed with the glitchiness of arpeggiating the high harmonized chords. It Pitch Fork any better?

But no really, don't do that

>>63703608

Playing a generic kick-snare-kick-snare beat is anything but fun. Chugging on a root note is not fun either. And the guitarists get it worst. Literally just play the same power chord chord progression and boom you have every Joy Division song ever.
You want him not to hate you? Play something less fucking boring

Bass VI seem weird, as much as I'd love an 8 string, they seem a bit gimmicky since they don't have as much high notes.
I'd rather get my hands on the Ibanez one if I really wanted one though, the SRC, it has humbuckers so I feel like it would be better suited for me.

>>63704492
They're easy to find for the most part, do their job well and they made a wide variety of them, from jangly chorus to the crushing HM-2

The behringer T/P and the digitech synth wah are not something you'd want to use outside of bedroom practice. But, they're both dirt cheap so it's not a waste of money anyways.

Well no shit why the fuck would I want to use Behringer

In my defence, the Behringer was £6 on eBay.

What's your issue with the Synth Wah? It's like you hate wild, uncontrollable totally out of context noise.

Does anyone know of a guitarist/band who achieve(s) a similar sound as the examples below (feedback laden, whammy/bend happy, fuzzy, noise, big rises)? I'm looking for the guys who do this sound best, but it's important that they have good musical ideas and structure, which is where Becuz (where I like the sound achieved) fails. The Great Alligator achieves a lot of what I'm looking for (good focus on building), but it can be too simplistic in its musical ideas and development.

Flipped guitars are pretty uncomfortable IMO especially with the offset shape. I saw a warmoth copy someone made on ebay but the bidding got up to $1000+ so I didn't think it was worth it.

Get an interface and a DAW, and a guitar mic like an SM57 if you specifically want your amp's tone.
Running directly into your PC's sound card is a bad idea, it adds latency and makes the sound meh, I do it because I have no other option.
You can also just write them down in guitarpro or tuxguitar, or even on paper.
>>
>>63706767
Audio interfaces are cheap these days. You have no excuse to record like that
>>
>>63706238
no. you can get the top of the line agile for that price.
>>
>>63706810
They are, but I don't have any spare money right now since I just bought an amp, it's definitely on my list though.
Plus, if I want to actually record something seriously, I can get to a bassist friend's house, it's more for fooling around and working on my tempo.

Do you sometimes contemplate about life during a gig?

One time I saw a band that looked exactly like this. They had a generic graphic name, an illegible logo, corpse paint, gritty look, the works. They made it look like they were going to play some trve kvlt black metal or grindcore or something, but they actually played an hour of very bubbly, friendly jangle pop. Like, Tokyo Police Club (Champ-era) type catchy stuff. They were singing about girls and covering Kimbra and Foster the People. Lots of people got so fucking mad and left in droves. The ones who stayed threw bottles and shit at them. Lots of fun, would see them again.

Though I gotta say, nowadays that is the only recreational activity I do. Gave up video games a while ago. I dunno details about it but addiction runs in the family really badly. I have a weird issue, could someone help me? I replaced the input jack on my bass, the old one literally fell apart. I only had a stereo jack lying around, but no big deal I soldered it on correctly and everything worked. Screwed the jack into the pickguard, put everything together, and suddenly I get an insane amount of humming. Unscrew everything, test it again, it suddenly works without a problem. I found out that, when I screw the input jack in too tightly it starts humming. What could be the problem here?
>>
>>63707554
A piece of uninsulated cable touches the metal input jack cover once you put it in?
>>
>>63707554
The ground wire is probably poorly soldered. Could also be that screwing it in too tight is somehow causing the metal to bend away from the proper position. Make sure you try another cable.
>>
>>63707588
No, I can have the input jack and the pickguard literally outside of the bass, I keep screwing in the input jack bit by bit and at some point it just starts humming.
>>63707611
On the input jack? It's soldered on just fine. Tried different cables already. It literally happens when I screw in the jack too tightly, could the jack itself be bending/making wierd contact with itself in some way?
>>
>>63707554
Ground solder is probably touching your jackplate anon
>>
>>63707670
can you post a pic of the jack and the cavity it screws into?
>>
>>63707674
There is no plate, the jack is screwed into the pickguard directly and touches the ground foil there (which it is supposed to do). I tried touching the foil with the jack outside, no humming. Screw it in, no humming, screw it in a bit tighter, suddenly it humms like crazy.

>>63707718
I'm not at home right now, but it's like pic related. And it has to have something to do with the input jack, as I said it works all the time, even when screwed in, just when I screw it in extra tight it suddenly humms like crazy .
>>
>>63703813
she plays that so much harder than it has to be holy shit
>>
>>63707780
When you get home post a pic of yours. Bit tough to say just based on the design. Could the jack be twisting when you screw it in? Is thr jack only connected to ground by the foil, or is there also a wire? One guess is that the foil contact is getting wrinkled or something when you screw it in too tight. Maybe the contact between a potentiometer and the foil is being lost as well. Seeing your cavity will help a bunch. When you get home, we'll still be here.
>>
>>63707780
I've never seen that kind of setup. Usually the ground on the input jack is wired directly to the pups. But in your case it's supposed to go trough jack then foil then pups?
>>
>>63706238
Absolutely
Epiphone has great qc
I've played every Gibby & Epi Les paul at a GC once, and while there were a few great Gibsons, there were some shitty ones too. But all but one or 2 Epi's were just as good.
I ended up buying a Epi Standard. It was magical. I could've afforded a way more expensive guitar but this one was the one.

What's the nastiest sounding distortion that /gg/ has ever heard?
>>
>>63708493
Nasty as in good, or nasty as in inaudible garbage ?
Because the HM-2 is probably the best distortion pedal on its own, or otherwise Meshuggah's tone live, it just crushes you and keep on doing it.
Or just a regular 6505/5150 with an OD in front (or the MXR 5150 pedal but I haven't tried it personally), it's stupid, but it works great.
Shittiest ? Probably one of those cheap Behringer/Digitech 20$ distortion pedals. There's plenty of them.

>>
>>63708770
reverb/ebay if you don't mind paying extra, or otherwise look into local pedal builders if there are any.

>>63708797
Les's tone is really fat, so maybe it's a matter of getting the low, gritty fundamental ?
>>
>>63708861
>Les's tone is really fat
He also uses like 6 different basses regularly. I knew that his 6-string fretless is 36'', but his "old" main bass was actually 32'', and his new main bass is now 36'' even though it's just a 4-string. Maybe he just got so used to the scale length? I have no clue, would be interesting to know what string gauge he uses on it though.

My bass's open E-string is buzzing. I'm pretty sure it's at the first fret. Is it a neck or string height thing?

the low e string buzzes horribly on my classical, but stops if i press down on the bridge. is this something i can fix myself or should i bring it to shop?

are B-52 cabs any good? A guy is offering me a 4x12 AT-412A for 100 bucks but the tolex is all fucked up.

fuzz is normally looser and thicker. A straight ahead distortion pedal is a better look for tight metal chainsaw kind of stuff.

The mastotron does heavy fuzz, velcro like sputter fuzz, and a little sub octave. It does a nice job of allowing you to mix and match the three whether you want a small fuzz boost, full on explosion tone, or your guitar to cricket in and out with hard cuts.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure the body and pickup placement stays the same for Sandberg basses, but they offer them in 34'' and 35'' scale variants. Wouldn't that change the characteristics of the pickups a bit? Both are more to the bridge side now relative to the 34'' scale counterpart. Am I over thinking this? I really wanted a 35'' scale for a 5-string.

I will have an old git in my town paint it, does set ups and paint quite well for a reasonable price. >>63713224
That idea is made of epic win, just don't know if it fits this guitar model that well
>>
>>63713298
If that's a strat trem then it'd be hard, you could still route underneath the pickguard for the electronics but if you want the surf trem you're out of luck.

You'd probably be better off trading it in for a vintage modified or something similar. If you just wanna throw the electronics of a jag/jazzmaster in there then you could probably route it yourself but if I were you I'd just get a VM
>>
>>63713298
not without having to refinish shit, or doing some rough stuff, you could remove the strat trem and fill the routed hole with wood and wood epoxy, then use that to mount the new bridge, then rout out the trem slot and electronics paths under the pickguard. would have to refinish the front and back though so effort and money

>>
>>63712948
the bridge pickup gets a lot more growly on a longer scale length especially with that pickup type. It also makes having a d tuner a lot more useful if you're already tuned down some
>>
>>63713466
I hadn't really thought much of the effort or the cost. I was more so just wondering but thanks
>>
>>63713511
Interesting, I don't think I mind that but I based my decision on a 34'' scale model... It doesn't impact the neck pickup that much?
It's a 5-string, I don't see why I'd need to downtune anything except for open string stuff.
>>
What's the least I could get away with paying for a respectable classical guitar?
Bare minimum as long as it's not poorly made.
>>
>>63713621
going from a 34 to a 35 doesn't affect the neck pickup as much as the bridge for sure, but it's just 1 more inch worth of added tension and anything you might not like about it can be EQ'd out really
>>
>>63710288
it's a loose brace most likely. Try seeing if pressing down next to the bridge also stops the buzz. If so you probably can't fix it yourself.
>>
>>63713668
Okay, good to know. I just wanted the 35'' scale to tighten up the B-string, completely forgot that it might change the overall sound and nobody has the 35'' versions in stock so I can't compare them either.
>>
>>63713646

How do you personally crown with a crowning file??

I got some recently and I like how they work. I mark the tops with a sharpie and most of the time the file scratches the mark off before the crown is thin enough. This happens even if I brush between every stroke. I'm doing something wrong, halp

go to a smaller file if that happens. Sometimes I give a couple strokes with my medium file and do the bulk with the small. Using a too small file has the risk of denting the sides of the fret, so try to make sure you keep the file level to the radius of the fret as you move it.

Interesting, thanks dude. So, with jumbo, I start with the wide and go down to the medium.

I have a FretGuru beam and the last couple times I've used an 8" radius block. For crowning files I have a wide, medium, and the stewmac tri-square and cant saw. I also have a 1/4 round that I think could work well on narrow to medium wire. Since the wide is so wide, I want to try to file with the side and do one side at a time.

>>63715349
don't buy shit you don't need. Pretty good policy for life in general actually. Sure, if you take that literally you don't need a single guitar, but really you don't need more than one electric guitar. It can be a good thing for sure but not really a necessity. Limiting your timbres available can help you focus on composition, too. There's plenty of famous guitarists who only owned one or two guitars, and quite a few who did all their song writing on one acoustic guitar.
>>
>>63716107
I plugged in and just stared at it cause I didnt know any chords. The girl thought I was dumbfounded by it and handed me a pick, I dont use picks which heightened my autism. I'll give it another shot next time im there.
>>
>>63716098
Well, all I've got is a Carpenter's level and a 3-in-1 crowning file. I use the crowning file for fret ends. I don't feel a neck jig is necessary because you can more or less get the job done with normal clamps.

Ok /gg/ I need you help

Me and my buddy are finally gonna start gigging in the near future so we need to get a good backline.

I have my Acoustic 270 and a 410 cab that are pretty ok sounding, and I use both for bass. (pic related although my JM doesnt look like that anymore) My friend doesn't have an amp and he's not very knowledgeable about amps, I keep trying to get him to buy a Marshall cab since we play Dino Jr/Husker Du inspired stuff but his budget is pretty limited (500 bucks), any ideas how we can get a decent guitar backline for that amount of money?

Used peavey stack?

I don't know many specific models that'd be good but I really like the Roland Jazz Chorus models, you can get a JC120 for about $400 (if you get reallyyy lucky).

Check what your local shops have, especially the used ones. If there's nothing good look on reverb, craigslist, or even music go round's website. One of those is bound to have something good enough in his price range

These don't seem like really complex tones to get, it sounds like the typical overdriven british amp and I'm pretty sure you could get that out of a fender as well with some pedals (which is nothing short of surprising considering they're similar circuits)
As for the live feeling though, I heard J. Mascis uses a shitload of amp on stage, which on a limited budget is hard to replicate.
If you just need a cab, 500$ is plenty enough to find a used Marshall 1960, but if you need a head as well, you could try some of the Peavey stuff, which generally sells for dirt cheap (like the valveking series, which apparently is closer to a JCM800 iirc).
I'd also suggest the Roland JC120 which surprisingly sells for cheap, but it might not be suited too well to that kind of music.
The Marshall valvestate 8100 and 8200 could be a good choice, some people disregard them really fast since they have a solid state power section and not tubes, but if they're in a good state, they're great amps.
Look for pawn shops as well, sometimes owners don't know shit about music gear.

Forgot pic.

Yeah, I had that also when I was just leveling and crowning. I decided to figure out re-fretting and went all out as far as tools. I'm sure I got some stuff I won't need, most of it has been helpful so far.

what's the most gimmicky pedal out there that's not the miku one?

Thanks anons, yea we're trying to buy used but it's hell to find good used gear here (Tijuana, Mexico) cause everyone around here buys the shittiest gear possible.

I was actually thinking of getting a JC-120 for myself some day, but yea I'm sure we can find a good Marshall stack in San Diego, thanks again for the options.
>>
>>63716808
used peavey 212 combos are loud as hell and cheaper than you need. With the leftover you'll be able to get a cheap preamp so you can sculpt the tone to whatever you like.

FUCKING AGREED DUDE. Why do people rip on Schecter's so god damn much all their machines are amazing.
>>
>>63717239
The thing with neck jigs is that they're usually just making you fret job worse. You should level the frets so that the leveling evens out the slight bumps and warp of the neck. If you clamp it, you even out those bumps but only temporarily. When you take the clamps off the neck will start to move back to how it was before and you will have uneven frets. Just my opinion though, the difference is so small it's difficult to know for sure.

I think a neck jig should only be used to repair a badly warped neck by leaving it clamped with a slight upbow and the truss rod loose for up to a week.

Former San Diegan, check out that shitty Guitar center in San Ysidro everything there is literally used except a few high priced guitars. The amps sounds solid but when I went they didnt want the cabs plugged in. Good luck man.

So how do you get good at tapping with your right hand and instantly go back to regular picking ? I can't get it right, either I rush the tapping, or I'm late on the picking, is there any trick or just practice ?

>>63717512
They're great guitars, but they're just way too ugly, and it's not because "theyre too metal the edges hurt my fingers", because I love Ibanez, but there's something that doesn't look right most of the time. Except for the banshee elite, those are cool.
>>
>>63717665

Oh shit you're right, I completely forgot about the GC outlet.

They usually only have shitty metal-head gear but from time to time they do bring in good shit. Thanks anon.
>>
>>63717688
not the other anon but the hellcat and ultra vi are pretty cool too imo, those are the only ones id play

Repaint it. Put some DR strings to match the color scheme you choose.

There are Chinese humbuckers on eBay for $20that supposedly kick ass

I have one. Its great through a bass amp but kinda meh through a guitar amp. Godly fuzzed up or distorted. You're probably gonna need a Staytrem bass VI bridge to get the low E string intonated correctly. Oh, the trem kind sucks for divebombs, they sound better with thinner strings.

I tap with my middle finger for that and hold the pick normally with my index and thumb.

What color should I repaint? and if you could link to the humbuckers that would be super tight

Just my personnal take but I'd simplify the bass lines, give more spacing to the guitar lines, the chords are nice as is the drumming.

what if you're sweep tapping or something which requires more than one finger
also have this question

The bass VI and bassman are at my studio right now. Ran the VI thru a JCM 800 the other day and pretty much came my pants. Ill get a demo done maybe this weekend.
>>
>>63718068
I've got the Squier version, I just threw some thicker gauge LaBellas on there to get it to feel right in E. I've had the most fun with it plugging it into a Bass Big Muff and running the wet output to a bass amp and the dry through my guitar pedal chain into a tube guitar amp. Shit sounds MASSIVE

Ive always found SGs to be sexy.
>>
>>63718200
It's actually all guitar, but I see what you mean. I blame that on the fact that it's improv done in one take, though considering that I'm amazed I was able to make it sound somewhat coherent.
Thanks for the feedback my man.
also, the drums are all ez drummer, god bless that plugin
>>
>>63718256
Those antigua Squire bass VI's are really fucking cool. Yeah, I remember someone saying LaBella would put together a custom gauge bass VI set for a flat rate. I bought the staytrem bridge to buy the d'addario strings in bulk.
>>
Any luthiers here? I wanna learn how to do all that fun stuff but don't really know where to start
>>
>>63718492
make simple shapes like slab telecasters.
buy necks for cheap then look at how theyre made
necks are literally aids, id rather make a semi hollow archtop than a fucking neck
>>
>>63718628
Is it hard to cut the bodies? I figured the general shape would be easy but the curves and the routing seem tricky. I can't imagine making necks, how the hell do you get the truss rod in there??
>>
>>63718207
Middle, ring finger I'd say.
I don't do tapping too often be honest my f.am.

How do I play my guitar/bass with a violin bow? I like the sound of it but it's a bit cumbersome

>>
>>63718735
you either get a ball ended routing piece and route a slot under where the fingerboard is, or you route the bottom of the neck out, drill a hole from the top of the headstock connecting them, then glue in a covering piece of wood once its in, thats what skunk stripes are.
bodies arent bad, you can jigsaw them then sand it down with a spindle sander or a drum sander bit on a drill in a vise. if you have a table router you can just make a shape blank or buy one, then raise the router bit height so the bottom of the bit is at the height of the template, then use it as a guide
>>

Could someone tell me how the hell you know what chords to play in this situation?
>>
>>63714267
I use a triangular file and just roll over the fret by hand.
>>
>>63718977
thanks man, holy shit I got a lot of learning to do

what about painting/finishing? I'm guessing it's best to use sprays for both?
>>
>>63719037
yeah if you can get an air compressor for spraying, though some brands of spray can can be alright. you should look up wet sanding btw, as well as prepare yourself to work through several different grits of sandpaper before you even get to painting
also necks are aids cause necks include doing fret work and that shit is just annoying
>>
If i get a vintage modified jaguar will I need to replace the bridge? If so what should I go with

How can I find the date of manufacture on a Fender Squier Strat without a serial number?

I picked up something similar from GYBE but with a screwdriver instead of a drumstick, incredibly fun thing to do
>>
>>63719078
a guy I know who worked on a few of my guitars had his own company for a bit, I think he just ordered warmoth necks for the same reason tho

Necks seem like a total bitch to do, especially if you want different wood for the fretboard.....wooooeeeee
>>
>>63719131
I just got a mastery, they're top notch
>>
>>63719298
the investment required just to get tools to do fret work correctly is fucking aids
>>
yo guys i recorded a shitty cover of don't talk, check it out

https://clyp.it/sca4ylug

please ignore the a) horrible quality (recorded through laptop mic)
b) bad timing (i just started recording stuff and i'm having so much trouble figuring out how to sync my tracks up, it was in time when i played it)
c) the click at the beginning (it was the only way i could think to try to sync the tracks up but they're still off by like a couple ms)

but anyway other than that there it is. figured out the melody and interlude parts by ear and looked up the chords online. found my own voicings though, i think they sound pretty good
>>
>>63719628
Sounds good, are you playing Chord melody or overdubbing?

Who is the original song by?
>>
>>63719714
the bass notes and chords are one track and the melody is another. i wanted the chords to be full and i also wanted to be able to give the melody justice so i was a little hesitant to try chord melody, especially after seeing one online that just had bad timing and stuff.

and the original is off pet sounds by the beach boys
