post your recent pickups anon, I got these last weekend while passing through Austin
>>
>>63649953
i bought phil collins - both sides, genesis - abacab, yes - big generator, and some stupid yanni album for 3 bucks
>>
literally why
>>
What is the appeal of buying cassettes? I don't fucking get this shit at all.
>>
>>63650031
Cheap and fun?
>>
>>63650047
Is it really that much cheaper? How is it fun?
>>
>>63650031
All means of physical media are inferior to digital.

It is purely for the value of collection.

>>63650113
It widely varies, but cassettes are typically $15-20 cheaper.

>How is it fun?

It is fun in the same way collecting anything at all is fun. You even have the benefit of it overlapping with another hobby and thus have the opportunity to use them, unlike if you collected something with no other use than appearance.

And finally, some releases are solely available on cassette.
>>
>>63650185
>$15-20 cheaper.
what the fug

I meant CDs

>And finally, some releases are solely available on cassette.
as a physical media this is true but even then I've still always preferred files
>>
what were you in austin for? did you get those at waterloo?
>>
>>63650219
>I meant CDs

Most of the time tapes are still cheaper than CDs.

>as a physical media this is true but even then I've still always preferred files

There are still some releases solely available on tape, either because they have not been ripped yet or all the rips are of unbelievably bad quality.
>>
>>63650185
>All means of physical media are inferior to digital.
Not cds. Unless you think hi-res files sound better
*cough snake oil cough*
>>
>>63649953
Instead of being a filthy hipster post vinyl/cd/cassette generals instead, because true patricians collect on all formats, only entry level hipsters collect cassettes and nothing else.
>>
>>63650326
>Not cds. Unless you think hi-res files sound better

Lots of CDs are brickwalled to shit, and regardless, you're paying for something you already had on your computer and therefore could just make by yourself.
>>
>>63650390
Okay go make the booklet, and back insert for the cd yourself in high quality (not cheap print out shit) and make a glass mastered cd by yourself.
>>
>>63650241
I was on tour with a friends band and we were just passing through to play a show. We went to waterloo (like everybody told us to) and I was actually super disappointed. It was the same commercial record shop that ever city in the country has, literally nothing special about it. I got this at end of an ear which was actually a really tight shop, great selection and prices with that mom and pop feel to it. Massive tape selection too.

>>63650362
I also collect vinyl.
>>
>>63650031
>>63650185
>>63650362
this is why we cant have these threads because of people like you
>>
>>63650450
Only plebs collect cassettes and vinyl only. "Muh analog! I'm cool with the patricians on /mu/ and don't by plebby cd trash since it's not popular with my fellow patricians on moo I'm so cool XD."
>>
>>63650472
All I did was answer why, because every single tape thread starts the same way.
>>
>>63650472
But >>63650362 is correct, why not merge all physical format threads into one to save space, the threads are less likely to die that way also.
>>
>>63650450
what band?
>>
>>63650509
If you already have vinyl and digital there really is no point in ever getting a CD (or a tape, for that matter).
>>
>>63650586
>Assuming all music exists on vinyl

Wew. You must be an entry level indie fan or something. Tons of stuff I like only exists on cd. And a lot of quiet music sounds bad on vinyl, for instance classical on vinyl is often shit.
>>
I recently bought the only 2 cassettes I own. Two Daniel Johnston tapes, Songs of Pain and Hi, How Are You.

i just like to collect music in physical formats, i usually go for cds unless it's casette/vinyl only, like these
>>
remember when cassette generals were active

>>63649953
nice grabs. you must be cool
>>
>>63650708
That's the only time I buy tapes too, if they don't exist on cd or vinyl, or occasionally if the tape is way cheaper (like 1/4, 1/5 the price)

>>63650708
also i bought this floppy disk release from some guy on /mu/ for shits and giggles
>>
>>63650545
Just some local band called Telephone Tag who I run a tape label with here in Colorado, they did a little Texas tour over spring break and were nice enough to give me a seat in the van.

Also holy fuck, is anybody gonna actually talk about collecting tapes or are we all just gonna bitch about formats?
>>
>>63650669
>Assuming all music exists on vinyl
>Assuming all music exists on CD

>And a lot of quiet music sounds bad on vinyl

You are not buying physical medium for the sound quality. If you cared about that you would listen to the digital file.

If its only available on CD, then get the CD. But otherwise you should get the vinyl.
>>
>>63650700
My homie actually just got some Daniel Johnston live at SXSW tape with a hand drawn cover, no idea where it came from but I've always on the lookout for a hi how are you tape
>>
>>63650765
have you listened to it yet
>>
>>63650843
>You are not buying physical medium for the sound quality.

I would prefer to buy a physical copy that has the best sound quality, I actually play my physical copies and don't just keep them on the shelf never using them. New vinyl sounds good though for most music.
>>
>>63650872
no, i don't have a drive for it. i have no idea what's on it, although i've heard the digital album. it's either just 1/2 songs or it's hella compressed because floppy disks are pretty small
>>
>>63650708
Is that Jimi Sharp tape real? If so, where the heck did you get it? They're incredibly rare, I can only imagine that you went to an early Microphones show.
>>
Most DIY artist's release on cassette, but it's slowly getting more and more expensive because shit like Urban Outfitters hopping on and and driving up the demand for it. So it's kinda like where vinyl was 7 years ago, and I'm worried the cycle will repeat it's self we've already seen the price of cassettes go up 10% in the past year.
