Who are some musicians with no musical training? Meaning they aren't theory masters and mostly go by what sounds good to their ear.
>>
>>63644528
Honestly it seems like most non classical musicians don't have more than some casual guitar lessons. Plenty of exceptions but it seems that the majority are self taught.
>>
The only theory I know has been absorbed by osmosis over the course of 7 years of guitar lessons.

>Generally speaking, I know what the words scale and chord mean
>I kinda know what a blues scale is
>I understand the concept of a "root note" in a chord progression
>>
>>63644563
I agree, most musicians aren't out there studying music theory, they just write groovy jams.
>>
AnCo, didn't they go to school? Don't think that counts.
>>
How did Avey stay young while the others justed?
>>
>>63644600
>>63644563
This is all you pretty much need unless you're trying to be Sufjan Stevens or something.
>>
>>63644563
that's actually becoming less and less common, the mentality that you need a college education for things you don't really need a college education for has seeped it's way into pop and rock music as well.
>>
what would be more interesting would be to ask which contemporary musicians ARE classically trained
a lot of musicians just got lessons when they were young and went from there
very few actually study theory
>>
>>63644637
They didn't do any formal musical education as far as I know
>>
>>63644667
OH IT SHOWS
>>
>>63644667
So everybody is listening to a band of business majors? Knew there was something wrong with them.
>>
>>63644528
Reportedly, Buzzo of The Melvins knows absolutely nothing about music theory.

Panda certainly had musical education. He received piano lessons at a young age and cello lessons later on. He also sang tenor in his school choir.
Also, if Avey had little to no musical education, then that would blow my mind. His use of irregular time signatures and some of his piano playing suggests that he might have been taught a few things.
>>
>>63644563
Blame Hendrix and Clapton. Young kids trying to get into guitar think it's cool to be self-taught and never learn proper form/technique without realize that they're probably not the next Hendrix/Clapton.

Finding a classically trained guitarist is a fucking pain in the ass nowadays.

Anon, if you knew anything about music theory you'd know that "playing what sounds good to your ear" is following music theory. Whether you can explain it in official terms or only know it by feeling it is still knowing music theory.

Brant Bjork never took music lessons, he just jammed with his friends until he was good.
>>
>>63644930
If you know major scales, minor scales and the pentatonic you can pretty much figure out what sounds good from there. I don't see much necessity to be classically trained, thought it would help.
>>
>>63644917
Panda Deak and Avey all had formal training at music conservatories I believe, not sure about Geologist
>>
>>63644648
>unless you're trying to be Sufjan Stevens or something.
why? what's special about sufjan in this regard?
>>
>>63645106
That explains why geo fucks everything up with his shitty filler samples and muddy synths
>>
>>63645470
Nothing, faggots just really want to believe there's more to him than some douchebag trolling old Christian folk music for stuff that will hit with the kids.
>>
>>63645470
He is a classically trained oboist and takes a lot of formal inspiration from Stravinsky and Reich to create his more lavish orchestral pieces.
>>
Being familiar with the sound of each fret on the guitar is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more important than knowing the names of the scales when playing guitar music
Knowing what each of the knobs on the synthesizer do is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more important than knowing why it makes it sound like that when making electronic/synth music
>>
>>63645711
didn't know that. that makes me appreciate his music more. thanks anon.
>>
>>63646112
What is a scale but a grouping of sounds on a fret? Why do you suck so badly?
>>
>>63644528
Mike Patton
>>
>>63646112
Fretboard sorry.
>>
>>63644528
just about all them? especially guitar-centric bands.

>>63646112

>>
>>63646216
Man what is the average age of this board? That dude sounds like he's literally 16. I know 4chan is on the younger end compared to reddit but fuck this is really bad.
>>
>>63646112
why did you put your name in here you just embarrassed yourself in an attempt to look smart on a board.

Gotta turn on your name so people know to upvote you.
>>
>>63645011
I have to agree. "Music theory" is used too often as a buzzword for people who want to sound smart while talking about the only thing they have any knowledge of. Most people only learn basic production, chords, basic scales, and play what sounds good to them.
>>
>>63646317
I mean, I'm positive that the majority of this board cannot play music and know basically nothing about how music works while simultaneously being elitist about their musical opinions. It's really an insufferable shithole.
>>
>>63646112
Music theory isn't just about what to call everything. It's the grammar you use to compose more complex music.
>>
>>63646854
Pretty good way of putting it. Music is a language and music theory is the grammar.
>>
>>63646168

For a musician who can't read music he's doing pretty good

The Beatles were self taught.
>>
Pretty sure Claudio Sanchez is musically illiterate.
>>
>>63645711
wouldn't know it from his really repetitive, non-textural, dynamic-less arrangements
>>
>>63644563
Actually many decent producers have some clue about musical theory. Those that are considered "legendary" (richard d. james) are usually very into that stuff. And it's impossible to do jazz and even more prog-ish guitar music without some theory.

I though RDJ never had any form of classical training and just did stuff by ear rather than by theory
