I listened to Pink Moon on shroom truffles a while back. Was a lightweight when it came to psychedelics.

It's not something that happens in a day. It comes from years of listening to different stuff (thereby gaining exposure to genres you may have previously not enjoyed) and perhaps a natural propensity toward boredom with sameness.
I started my musical journey as a 13 year old Linkin Park fan like any other. Today I can genuinely say I enjoy extremely wide swaths of the musical landscape, and I'm at least open to giving the stuff I don't enjoy a try/second look. The recognition that I might like something today that I didn't like a year ago is something that solidifies, again, through experience.
Without experience, you get the "I can listen to any song by said artist and decide if I like it rather than downloading the album" mentality which really sets you back in the grand scheme of "Musical Appreciation" -- which is ultimately what /mu/ is supposed to be about.
