music is also being produced and released at a much higher rate than before. at this point it's almost all branding, many people don't care about what artists say they care about what liking the artist says about them.

That hasn't happened. At all. Has it? Support local and independent artists. Mainstream media and major labels don't need to make money off of CD sales. CDs are obsolete first and foremost, and second, most of the money IS made through shows, touring, and merch. So fuck off you idiot. Yeah, they were full time musicians who managed to survive without a label contract, and in the late 70's too.

No, they're not. One of the people you replied to provided evidence proving that. Gen X-ers and Millenials are from two distinct generations. That's why the former are called Gen X-ers. Because they're from Generation X, unlike Millenials, who are from the Millenial generation also known as Generation Y.
