How well received an album is shouldn't matter that much. Yeah, some of their songs have repetitive pop melodies. But to label them a basic pop band is contestable and gives me the impression that you're only familiar with Currents or the singles from their albums actually worth listening to.

You'll surprise me everyday, if an artist is shit on stage he is worth nothing.
For example I once listened to "kiss the anus of a black cat" and I tought they were okay enough. So when they played in my city I figured out that they'll be better live than studio like most of the bands I saw. And I was so fucking wrong, worst concert of my life, I can't describe how much it was shit. I deleted they're album the next day. And I lost like 20 $ to see their shit show.
I never saw tame impala live and I never will because I don't like them but I saw deerhunter live and they were ON FUCKING POINT ! Deerhunter was an Incredible experience live, far better than the album.
