I like Triple Sons and the last track is amazing but the other two don't really do anything for me. Maybe I just need to give them time.
Everyone also describes this as their saddest album but I don't get that either. Other than the closer there's nothing here that matches up to songs like Batwings or Cold Cell. Is it just sad because of context and John's impending death?
I dunno. I'll definitely revisit but I just wonder if I'm looking at it wrong. Based on what I read about it this sounded right up my alley but based on first listen it's one of my least favorite by them so far.

it took me a few listens to get into but it's now my favourite coil album
i don't think of it as a sad album really i just like jhon's vocal performance on it
not everyone has the same taste in music, it's ok if you don't like it.

People will say Ape of Naples but I think Backwards is the place to start now imo
It got canned back in the 90s and only saw the light of day in its original form late last year. It's a great mix of early and late Coil, and it shares a few songs with Ape of Naples. I think it's better to hear them in the dance-y upbeat forms they appear in on that album first so that AON's ethereal, almost heavenly atmosphere is enhanced by the contrast. But that's just me.

I like his delivery on that one a lot but it's harder to get into the lyrics. I know they're mostly improv'd, I'm just used to his other more complex stuff.
Yeah I know what you mean and I get sick of seeing people forcing themselves to like albums just based on their reputation. I just wanted to see if I was missing something before I set it aside since most of the stuff I read made it sound like it had everything I wanted out of a Coil album.

Was at the college library listening to this album. My headphone jacks weren't plugged when I thought they were. This went on for 5 minutes before I realized. People must of been like what the fuck is he listening to. Oh well
