My dad recently bought me a turntable, but no amplifier/hi-fi.

I can't help with amps but when it comes to records, never buy brand new. It's way too popular at the moment to justify doing this and it is absurdly expensive. eBay and charity shops are your friend.
People often ask for "essential albums on vinyl". This is beyond stupid. Just buy what you like. It's too expensive to justify buying ten Jazz albums and a bunch of Steely Dan because people say they sound nice.
Personally I like buying random shit on vinyl like Ethiopian drumming compilations and other things that are never likely to be available digitally.
Basically, just buy what you like. Try /g/ for equipment help. And don't tell them you're from /pol/ because nobody gives a fuck.
