Play it louder, and have the vacuum running in the background.

I don't know why people have such problems with listening to records

This.

Also, weed helps. You should be able to see the layers spread out in your head. Like looking at the ceiling of a planetarium.

i've never smoked weed so i cant even imagine what thats like. my cousin smokes a ton of it so i've been meaning to get some from him for awhile

I dunno, i guess i'm not impressed? everyone loves this album and wont shut up about how much of an amazing wall-of-sound it is, and i just dont hear it. its not as crazy as it could be, as people make it out to be. plus people making guitars sound droney, like wow cool, good job, i dont see the point. I'm definitely over thinking this, trying to find out why people like it instead of just liking the sounds, but thats because i don't particularly like the sounds. they're ok, but i feel like i should be head over heels for it, and i'm absolutely not, but part of me feels like i could be?

There's your problem. You're missing 1/2 the music.

At least get some portapros if you're poor.

Spend about $50 more on headphones and you'll notice the difference.

I have £200 headphones and it still sounds just "pretty good" after 5 or so full listens over the space of like a year.
Every song just sounds like a 10 second 7/10 melody repeated ad nauseum
The only song i really like is 'sometimes', purely because i associate it with Lost In Translation

>i feel like i should be head over heels for it, and i'm absolutely not, but part of me feels like i could be?

Good. That's how we all felt. Took me until my 4th listen until it clicked for me.

Really, the appeal of it is that the songs are supposed to represent far-off hazy memories, hence the unintelligible lyrics. And the overall softness of the album represents nostalgia. The distortion represents how one's memories of an event may be distorted from what really happen (notice how To Here Knows When sounds like a regular pop song without the distortion?).

Ultimately, I just gotta say keep listening to it. Don't focus so much about what's going on musically, but what feelings the music evokes in you.
>>
>>63516799
As somebody who plays guitar and absolutely loves post-effects/wall of sound/shoegazing, I happen to agree. This record could have been far more interesting, explosive, wacky, wild, etc. but that's not really what it's about. The textures are mildly abrasive, but mostly they're just lilting and lulling, it's like a strange Scottish lullaby. It's a very specific feel, one that only MBV could create. It's a classic m8, but it ain't perfect.
>>
>>63517084

Don't overthink it. It's actually a really simple Pop/Rock album. It's just kinda difficult to get into because of how noisy and harsh sounding it is at times. Most of the songs are pretty simple and catchy at the core though.

Then again, if it's not clicking because it's too Poppy for you then you probably won't end up enjoying it.

>fedoras who have never smoked weed talk about weed.

Anything with shitloads of fuzz, or is heavily layered will sound much better on marijuana. It alters how the brain perceives sound, and provides a perspective that is outside of normal experience where subtleties in texture aren't noticed.

>>63519594
>Medicinal purposes

It isn't. You're just an idiot because you can't differentiate a plant and the false negative stigma that goes with it.
>>
>>63516627
The two types of Loveless fans:

>People who believe When You Sleep is the best track.
>People who actually "get" Loveless

But seriously tho, it's a celebration of sonic textures. You'll never hear music the same way again once it clicks for you. You should be able to see shapes and colors in your head (like Kevin does) once that happens.

It is indeed a transcendental experience. Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't "get" the album.

Protip: Its gets better with each listen, because the fun is in deconstructing the layers in your head.

This never caught on with me. I love AnCo's other albums, bu I never saw the appeal in ear splitting beeps.
>>
It takes volume and maybe a couple of listens. I listened to it a few times and then listened to it in bed on headphones high as fuck one of the first times I smoked weed. The physicality of the music is one of my favourite things about it and the textures/tones. The great melodies and songs make it classic but you just have to let it wash over you.

If you're already a fan it sounds amazing on MDMA, acid too but the wall of sound and breathy vocals are perfect when rolling. Kevin Shields even said so.

You should actually try listening at low volumes, especially since you don't have an "audiophile" setup. It's probably the best substitute for drugs in terms of separating layers of sound and detecting changes in timbre.
>>
>>63523137
I actually like the album, but I cannot fucking stand the ear splitting beeps. It literally stands between you and the music, it's so goddamn intrusive. Any avante garde bullshit and artistic direction couldn't convince me that inflicting pain on the listener was a good call to make
>>
First time I listened to Only Shallow I felt like it was so abrasive, but a couple months later I tried it again. At first it felt awkward and suddenly bam it seemed to fit perfectly, and everything afterwards was just great.

As a guitar player, I was amazed at the use of effects and whammy at the time, it was inspirational for me. Also, how the album managed to sound soft yet hard, so to say. It didn't feel sad or happy, but something in between, it's hard to describe.

Perhaps the reason you didn't get it is precisely that - you didn't see all that whole lot regarding the guitar tone, which is the core of the album.

Just leave it aside for a while, and come back some time in the future if you happen to remember of it suddenly, and see if it works.

To Here Knows When may quite possibly be the greatest song of all time. It's the epitome of "beautiful noise". I've never encountered another track that's been able to control emotions through sound so well. It's dreamy, it's sleepy, it's sad, it's scary, but immensely joyful too. It takes on a different sound depending on what state or mood you're in. Sometimes harsh, sometimes calming, sometimes energetic. It's next to impossible to completely pin down all the textures and melodies in the song, so you're just forced to accept it for whatever it is.

If you get some decent headphones (like pic related) and listen to it in FLAC you can vaguely hear Blinda Butcher speaking at the end of the third track. she says something like:

Because you don't understand it. It's strength is in its ability to "illustrate" shapes and colors through sound. There's a lot going on that you're probably unable to perceive.

It's funny, there's a lot of this on /mu/. Many of the albums you guys jack yourselves off about appreciating are basic pop and rock songs that use novel effects and tone to sound different. It screams "I don't know much at all about music, but I still think I'm better than everyone"

Buddy, if I could make you see what I see in my head every time I hear Loveless, you'd be crying like a newborn. I've been a musician for most of my life, but hearing Loveless in my early-20s destroyed any preconceived notions I had of what "music" was.
And that was AFTER my IDM and post-rock phase. Loveless permanently altered how I perceive sound. I get that this comes off as pretentious to someone who hasn't experienced it, but trust me, once you finally understand it, life will never be the same.
Especially if you've devoted a great portion of your life to music like I have.

>>63527556
I don't know what to think about this, because it's hard to describe those effects and tones in terms of music theory, and most of those albums aren't stored in written form anyway. So "muh textures" is kind of a valid argument.
>>
>>63527187
It's pretty critically acclaimed so I imagine some normies would enjoy it.
>>
>>63527909
I'm not saying textures is a bad way to describe it, I'm just saying that having different effects than normal doesn't make basic rock music more complicated.
