Tame Impala is indie pop. Real Pysch wasn't about synthesizers and delay pedals. It was about experimentation and strange sounds/noises, and unique song structures and time signatures, and emulating the effects of psychedelic drugs. Not drowning generic pop songs in reverb.

first band to coin the term psychedelic rock was the 13th floor elevators from austin texas, specifically tommy hall i believe. they were preaching lsd for spiritual use in their music as early as 1965 (the kingdom of heaven is within you...)
they inspired the bay area scene when they went to california in the early-mid 60s to play live shows and came back with the grateful dead touring with them. their guitar player stacy sutherland also said texas had more thing happening than in la or san francisco in his opinion in the 60s and 70s (austin and houston mainly - david addickes' love street light circus and the feel good machine importantly, IA run by kenny rogers' brother leland)
also i believe houston-based the lost and found, also on the IA label, was the first rock band to be busted for LSD in history possibly
texas has a long history of psychedelia though from the start of the psychedelic movement with some of the first samples of peyote that were sent to parke davis in the 1880s supposedly from texas, UT in the 60s, san antonio mycologist dr steven pollock in the 70s, mdma chemist hobart huson in the 90s, etc
but some people like mayo from the red krayola didn't use psychedelic drugs to make true psychedelic (mind expanding) music
