Best AnCo in my opinion.
What went wrong with Painting With is instead of following their past flirtations with full-on Pop, they dove straight into the deep end with no experimentation and began to drown in their own over indulgence in mainstream sensibilities.
AnCo's peak was Here comes the Indian through Strawberry Jam. They should've never abandoned guitars.

They focused too hard on one style (that being the high-energy zero ambiance pop with a lot of vocal harmonies) and forgot to actually develop it.
Same thing happened with CHz to a degree, if Avey wasn't so preoccupied with the alien radio concept or whatever the album would've been much better. The songs that weren't cluttered and hyperactive, like Crimson and Gotham, were great.

It might not be super groundbreaking but as an Anco fan its still a fun as fuck listen (I like it in the car when im stuck in traffic going to work). Definitely not a pile of shit it just wasn't ambitious. Centipede hz is the real pile of shit when it comes to Anco albums

I really don't see how you're hearing Gentle Giant or XTC. I don't even like the album that much, but these criticisms sound really surface-level and reductive.
I personally don't they've had a single bad album, mediocre at worst, and the albums show so many differences between them that it's normal for the fanbase to be at each other necks a little.
The problem is that Anco listened to their fanbase.

I feel like people just want an entire album of My Girls. It's what I gathered from the Pitchfork review and other /mu/tants. They like the droney-synthy stuff or maybe they like the heavier beach boys stuff.

Ya the Avey songs were undeniably the best on the album. Giving Panda more control with MPP worked out best but it didn't work out so best with this album unfortunatley.

Nah, the synths on PBVsGR were much more lush and the hocketing was only used once (not to mention it was pretty novel then). The songs were also able to breath a little more.
