Young, got more heavily into classical music approximately 2-3 years ago. Favorite period is the romantic. Not in any arts program, but is in English or humanities. Something like that.

>>63350627
A weird fucker. I respect Stockhausen and ligeti, but they aint my favorites. You'd be fucked if you actually did like them a lot.

>>63350710
I don't say casual, because all of these composers are great. But I doubt you actually like the modernists either. You straddle the line of elitism, almost pretentious enough to betlittle people for liking "le meme composers" like minimalists and modernists, but not pretentious enough to go past the biggest greats.

>>63351327
Neat fellow. Somehow affiliated directly with music, whether by parents siblings or study. You don't venerate the romantic period, but you love music with character, stuff that is bombastic and expressive in an energetic way.

One of the greats imo. The only reason he doesn't get more attention is because he didn't technically innovate anything that significant. All his pieces themselves are pretty fucking great though. Quartets, symphonies, sonatas, concertos, they guy did it all.

I'd not be the best resource in that respect probably. I listen to his violin works most. All his violin sonatas are great.

The Classical symphony and Symphony 7 are really good.

Maybe you'd like the Prokofiev Violin Concerto 2? Its pretty frantic sounding, one of my favorites. The second symphony is good too, that'd probably be closest.

14 years. Played for about 12.

I'm not trivializing the technical prowess of each. Mozart, Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven are near to objectively the best composers of all time.

I just find that over the course of exploring the genre there are pieces that strike me more emotionally. Especially in regards to Mozart. Unless you thoroughly understand the context of his accomplishments at a young age your liable to become more attached to the works of romantic or modernist composers imo.

>>63353226
Still have good taste anon.

>>63352926
schumanns my favorite swashbuckling composer when it comes to treatment of melody with rhythm. mozart comes close in personal preference, but with an orderly eye of genius on form, instrumentation, and proportion.

prokofiev's there for the neoclassicist, yet dissonant, take.

i find that all 3 composers, at times, give me an impression of impetuous yet moody humor.

Not what I'm saying. I'm just saying its not very likely.

The people who tend to like all the greats are usually either very casual listeners or VERY patrician listeners. That's the funny thing. I think that most people that post in /classical/ are neither.

People that are casual listen to them because they're the most popular and accessible, people that are patrician listen to them because of formal perfection and all the other things that make them great.

Everyone that likes classical likes them. So I just find that when you ask the question who are your "favorites" its a given. That said, everyone turns to their personal favorites outside of the ubiquity and irrefutable quality of those composers.

I think most people see these threads as opportunities for self-expression and exposure. Thus people will say more obscure or controversial composers who eke out their personality better or who they want to promote / defend.
>>
>>63353688
>I think most people see these threads as opportunities for self-expression and exposure.

judging from your posts this may very well be true.

It's my case. I'm a casual classic music listner. It was classical radio where i learned to appreciate this music.
I like to listen to a lot of different things and i mostly don't say not to anything. The downside to this is that i don't get to really have a deep knowledge of most genres.
Anyway that said i have been listening to this record a lot: http://www.carpediem-records.de/en/vox-cosmica
It's from a female composer who lived in the 11th or 12th century. Really overwhelmed by her music.

Ha oh well.

That's the funny thing about classical, the very best music is loved by both people that are new and people that are long time lovers. Its objectively great stuff.

The well tempered klavier, art of fugue are really more studies than anything else but if you have an ear for detail and like the style they can be just about as interesting and pleasant. Its amazing to see him spin out the fugue in every form.

>>63355647
The 2nd PC is my all time favorite piano concerto, the only thing that could dethrone it is the Emperor. Re-listening to the 5th symphony i guess they'd actually have fit better. I actually think the PC is a bit more daring in terms of style actually. The 5th still has some resemblance to traditional style by comparison.

>>63356367
Coming up with themes for /classical/ threads is really the way to go imo, gets way more discussion going.

>>63355926
P'erhaps a tad lad.

Mahler and Wagner have great appeal for their thematic triumphs and the huge orchestral flourishes, but their overall body of work pales in comparison to many. Hell, Mahler is my own favorite, but when you can choose from composers who also wrote operas, sonatas, concertos, and quartets, there's much that leaves wanting.

Same with Wagner. I fucking love his overtures and his operas (if you see them live) will absolutely drain you emotionally (if you stay awake). They're good, but I'd take it that you're getting into things more often or don't have a solid classical education.

If you haven't looked into the impressionists give it a try. More understated composers are fantastic too.

Debussy and Ravel are comfy as fuck.
