there's plenty of 2000s music that wouldn't sound out of place in the 90s, and similarly plenty of 2010s music that wouldn't sound out of place in the 2000s. but both the 2000s and 2010s brought about new trends and sounds that weren't really prevalent in the previous decade

As much as I don't like it, trap rap and pop songs fused with EDM will be remembered as distinctly 2010s. I just hope something better happens with the 2020s (in the mainstream I mean).
