Pitchfork puts news above reviews now. Final nail in the coffin imo. What are some other, BETTER, independent sites to go now for music recs and reviews?

At this point, shilling welcome

what would you rate this:
>>63314730

also why the hate for RA?
>>
>>63314767
Marcel is hit or miss, I think because of his age. His pom pom review is laughably atrocious, for reference. But occassionally he pulls some decent unheard of stuff. But still, TMT is better for that

RA hate: it's disgusting to look at :\
>>
>>63314821
That's a fair analysis on Marcel. But RA can be good for some obscure techno and house. I think RA, Marcel, and FACT occasionally talk about the same underground house musicians who put out weird tapes, all of which are top notch quality producers.
>>
>>63314858
Honestly I think every site has the potential for obscure stuff. Like I discovered 0.02 because of basementality, and I love that album. Probably my AOTY. And then RA had a good pick with Whities 006.
>>
>putting the news at the top of the page instead of the side

Are you really that autistic that this triggers you? I'd rather read their news then their reviews.
>>
>>63315036
It's not autism. It's a telling sign of what they value now. It used to be about the reviews, but now they're the most trusted voice in music, a news site with a subsection of reviews.
>>
Resident Advisor is pretty decent for electronic music, unlike Pitchfork or Fantano who think that Burial and Jamie xx are the greatest think that ever happened to electronic music and not actually just watered down garage and jungle re-appropriated into accessible "headphone" music for indie kids.
>>
I just stumbled upon this a few days ago. They've been reviewing pretty experimental shit and I like what I see so far. Hope they keep up honestly

>Basementality Media

One of the main problems with that site is they take all their cues from Pitchfork in that they'll give an album a pretty negative review but still give it like a 75 as a score. That essentially equates to nearly a "four star" album, but a lot of their writers seem to follow the misguided mentality of if "an album is bad if it doesn't get over an 80".

That's just fucking stupid.
>>
but they always ahve been? jesus christ that autism
>>
>>63312752
news is more important/interesting than reviews
>>
>>63315342
wtf is this? who's running this site? why is there no back button?
>>
Marcel's Music Journal is decent
>>
>>63315451
Eh. Pitchfork works under the guise of "83+ is worth hearing" but Basementality feels like "70+ is worth hearing"
>>
>>63315342
How did you even manage to find this...
>>
>>63315342
wtf is this
>>
>>63315342
this feels like a serial killer's site
>>
>>63315342
read the first review and I just have to say... wtf
>>
>>63315627
It really depends on who's writing the review it seems like in Basementality's case. Like there's not a set standard for the site so one of their writers could write a review for a "70" score album as pretty positive and the other as fairly negative. Whereas to be honest, anything above roughly a 60 (or a 3/5 stars) should be more or less positive.

The reviews seem to be on point it's just that occasionally the ratings don't seem to match up with the review and the value of the score itself changes from review to review.
>>
>>63315794
Give examples, I'm not following exactly. Granted I've only read a couple reviews
>>
>>63315342
This is autistic. How is this even a review?
>>
Cokemachineglow has the best review write-ups easily. I really like them, Resident Advisor, and Fantano honestly.
>>

Like http://basementalitymedia.com/2016/03/08/when-you-walk-a-long-distance-you-are-tired-album-review/#more-1066

which is a 3/5 but the review is pretty damn negative for a score that high.

http://basementalitymedia.com/2016/03/05/stranger-things-album-review/#more-1006

This is a 65 and is a pretty positive, but not exactly a gushing review.

http://basementalitymedia.com/2016/02/02/adore-life-album-review/#more-99

Here's one that's 69, but honestly gives a pretty mixed view of the record.
>>
Say it ain't so!

They had great best of lists and a writing style that didn't seem like they were trying to compete for "best high school essay under 500 words". Shit, RIP. Thanks for getting me into Swans.

I genuinely don't think fantano is a sell-out, I mean while he is the most popular music reviewer on youtube, it doesn't seem like he makes very much money off of it

mr. p started tmt over 15 years ago and the site is still going strong to this day. i think they've got one of the best writing staff around...

also Stereogum's album of the week essays are always really damn good.

1. Basementality Media is a shitty blog no one's heard of that keeps spamming themselves on here.

2. Stereogum don't post any obscure interesting music and rec nothing new. It's just the same PR blog hype shit.

yeah, I'm not saying is the best to discover music. But almost all of their long form written pieces hit the nail constantly.

The Painting With and TLOP reviews sound like some basement dweller is mad people are enjoying anything ever so he wrote reviews about two of the biggest albums this year to release some of his anger

>best music writing

lmao
>>
I still like gorilla vs bear. They're promoting a lot of great indie-pop/rock that gets ignored my most media outlets nowadays.

TMT is my go-to, and then RA.

I check p4k all the time tho just so see what they give a 9.0+ to. I don't give a fuck about BNM, but it seems like whatever albums they give a 9.0+ are those big ones that everyone talks about each year
