no, they're only good if you're a tryhard.
big wow, such dissonance, so chaos. There's a reason free jazz is completely dead, and it's because no one wants to listen to it. Those albums are only important as landmarks in the musical progression of the genre. They are not the best jazz albums of all time by an absolute mile, and people who think they are get their ideas about jazz from rym ratings

The fact that so many books still name Kamasi Washington as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" jazz musician ever only tells you how far jazz music still is from becoming a serious art. Rock critics have long recognized that the greatest rock musicians of all times are Kurt Cobaine and the Beatles, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Meme hip hop critics rank the highly controversial Viper over classical rappers who were highly popular on Soundcloud. Jazz critics are still blinded by commercial success. Kamasi Washington sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore he must have been the greatest. Rock critics grow up listening to a lot of rock music of the past, meme hip hop critics grow up listening to a lot of meme music of the past. Jazz critics are often totally ignorant of the jazz music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Kamasi Washington did anything worthy of being saved.

I only posted it as bait because usually just the mention of it is enough to rile some people up on here. However almost all the response was positive this time, so /mu/ must be coming around to it. I do consider it quite good though, obviously it's different from older jazz as it's coming from a totally different place, I can see how if you were into traditional styles it could throw you off. Personally my favourite jazz album is Headhunters.

If you liked Monk's Dream you'll especially enjoy Misterioso or atleast find it very interesting since it's also a quartet, playing pretty different tunes. But the main thing is that the group in Misterioso plays way more spontaneous (probably has something to it being live), and the musicians play very different as well. Main differences are between the two Sax players. Johnny Griffin (Misterioso) just fires up with crazy lines and melodic lines all the way. He's much more into the tradition and his sound is also less abrasive than Charlie Rouses'. I mean, Charlie Rouse is probably the only Sax player playing so close to monk so to me it's less interesting hearing such similiar players, especially since monk is so unique. But Johnny Griffin gives him that contrast and it just becomes bad ass as hell. Check it out my man. Also Roy Haynes is more reactive than Frankie Dunlop but both of them are top tier.

This is pretty normal to anyone already used to rock or any production-wise music. For me, what it worked was I had to pay carefuly attention to what is IN the music (interplay, solos and general melodie/concept). Also, I sticked with fewer albums... eventually, I got into it. When it does, you can't leave anymore. The first jazz album I fell in love was Maiden Voyage by Hancock. Anyway, if you're really instered, give yourself a couple of more chances. Cool jazz and modal may be a good entry.
>>
Embarrassing thread t b h
>>
>>63274972
>Also, I sticked with fewer albums.
That's the most important thing. And make sure you pay attention to something in each listen. Focusing on each instrument in every listen is a great way to get more into Jazz. Personally I don't do it enough because i'm lazy but ideally you want to listen to each album you like many times, each time focusing on a different aspect (like interplay, or a certain instrument, or just the solos). That's how you should listen to Jazz. And with less distractions as possible too.

It's certainly not something /jazz/ ever discusses but there's also no reason to go telling people to not enjoy something. It's not as if fans of it actually post in proper jazz threads so it's not bothering anyone.

>>63276638
I think the main issue with that album is that it makes people think it's really innovative and like kamasi is the new coltrane or something when in fact he didn't really bring anything new to jazz and his playing is not close in any way imaginable to trane. It's just infuriating when people say it's bringing jazz to life. I mean, it does make jazz popular and cool again so in that sense it's true, but jazz is pretty far from dead as there are a lot of great musicians doing new stuff and I don't think Kamasi is one. Just shit like Fantano saying if it's not in your jazz list, you don't have a jazz list. That kind of mentality makes a lot of people have negative feelings towards it.

lol that's so not true. Most jazz musicians cared a lot about covers and mostly clothing. being hip was a very important aspect of being a jazz player.

Yea well I think there's a lot of wrong things about a genre if the artists don't give a shit how they look like to their fans. That's mostly about style and clothing than covers, but having people like that just makes jazz looks like a genre for white nerds when it's quite the opposite. To play good Jazz you need to dress good and look good.

fags. look at jazz players. those who weren't high on dope all the time looked fine as hell. Obviously there are exceptions and not all jazz players were good dressers. But overall to fit in the jazz scene of the 40's/50's/60's, unless you played as good as bird or trane you had to look fine or people would straight up laugh at you. Jazz is music made by cool people with style most of the times. It's made by strong individuals not some pussy ass nerds.

Okay this guy is obviously putting his argument across really badly, but I don't think it's unreasonable to criticise modern jazz album covers. Blue Note and ECM made their records look slick as hell, you'd think modern labels like Criss Cross could've learnt from that.

Although not all classic jazz albums had great art...
>>
>>63278122
Being a good jazz musician is a lot more than just practice. You need to have a certain state of mind and bring a lot from yourself. If you just wasted all your time practicing without developing your individuality and personality and you're just a nerd who can't dress and can't talk to other jazz musicians you'll never make it. I'm not saying practicing is not important, it's the most important thing. But being able to communicate with other people and make yourself look and act cool is also a big part of it.

>>63278116
That's not my point. But it does have a lot to do with Jazz becoming so academic.

As I said there are exceptions. Trane and Bird being some as well. But as you can see those three really had excpetional talent. Most Jazz musicians during that time were really into dressing and looking sharp. That's just a fact. I don't know how someone can make the point that style is not important in Jazz or music in general for that matter. If you want to work with other people you got to know how to communicate and how to make yourself visually interesting.

Criss Cross album covers are actually really similar to Blue Note's and they almost definitely took Blue Note's style into consideration when designing their look. Even if you don't like it you do have to admit that Criss Cross covers are recognizable and distinctive.

I think this guy has a point. Jazz wasn't all about its music. It was a cultural movement and dressing good was part of it. Also, I've been reading some biographies and interviews about Thelonious Monk, and it seems this guy fails at some things you've mentioned: both socially and communicatively. Guy was a weirdo.
