A lot of people don't like him because he doesn't like a lot of "popular" music- most prominently, The Beatles, which he wrote an extensive essay regarding his disdain for. He's also one of the few big-name critics who has voiced praise for Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica", an album that continues to be the litmus test between plebians and patricians on /mu/.
