I'm a trash film major. I've never been what I'd call "good at music"- when I listen to something and form a connection with it, I can't be doing any other activity. I like to use all my brain power to digest music, which after a while felt daunting so I'd stick to what I knew or what friends listened to. I guess in that way I became "accepting" of all sorts of genres.

I didn't do a lot of extreme musical exploration until my major started demanding it- the right music for the right feel, ya know. Each project requires something else entirely- or maybe the project itself is based around and inspired by a jam. It's introduced me to some interesting artists for sure, and has kept my ears wide open for finding the next thing I want to use.

Except lately I've had a hell of a time. I've been working on this kind of abstract documentary, involving these woods near me that I like to travel. There's a shrine there, lots of artifacts and melted wax and a mystery behind who made it. And I can't find the right few songs to put in this damn thing. I've been hunting for months, but nothing quite... fitting has found its way to me.

I turned in a rough draft a week ago and threw Aphex Twin's Rhubarb on underneath, just so it wouldn't be empty. It kinda works with the narration and the feel, but it's not quite right.

I need help before I completely fucking lose my mind. The first part of the piece needs something... mystical almost, reminiscent of the woods, reflective of the natural mystery, and invoking of the happiness gleaned from it. That's not something you can just google, and I've more or less exhausted my brain power on this. Months of finding awesome music that I actually love, but that isn't immediately "useful" to me is breaking my damn spirit.

Try anything from the album Pink Moon by Nick Drake

It's guitar folk but it fits what you described.

bump for interesting thread. It would be helpful if we could watch part of the film...

I'll start trying to find some stuff for you though

Both gorgeous, just gave a quick scrub through of the albums. Whether or not I use them in this, they're being saved for future enjoyment.
ESPECIALLY enjoying Roy Montgomery, because it's more focused on instrumental it can be used without conflicting with the narration. Solid choices here, I'm going to have to give a more thorough listen later.

Excellent sounds. Man this thread is so far providing gold to me- saving this shit for sure. The lyrics make it a bit more difficult and I'd hate to edit around them.

I'm going to look a bit more into this artist, I'm liking what I hear. Spooky and natural and mystical.

>>63223630
definitely experimented with a lot of BoC, some Bonobo, Kondor, Casino Versus Japan... didn't get to really listen to and relish the music, I was hunting for a particular feeling, but I did some digging with them. I feel like shit because I can't enjoy them properly at all. I'll look into those albums.

His album Engravings has a lot of stuff which might be useful to you. That's just the song that I landed on. I'll keep searching but if I don't find anything and leave the thread good luck with your film!

oh and as for having some clips to reference- I'd send you some rough stuff now, but the file won't pull up on this computer because I edit on a different OS. I could give you a bit of the transcript?

The video playing overtop the narration are really just shots of trees, birds, deer flicking their tails, baby squirrels looking curious, shots of the towers of stacked rocks, macros of candles and the various trinkets, a long shot of a tree covered in wax and me standing under it... that may not be tremendously helpful. I also hope to place little animations into it, matching the style of the first image (which is my title screen).

Here's the transcript of the particular section:

"There are these woods, behind my apartment. And in these woods there’s this place… I don’t know what you’d call it, a fort? a stomping ground? ...a shrine?

I spent a lot of time back there over the course of a year of knowing it. It became this sort of catalyst for creativity because I just knew that there was someone, or some group of people that consistently tended to the place. Kids would go there, party, leave trash, destroy things, and the damage was upsetting every time… but every couple weeks it’d be cleaned and repaired as best it could be. And every time I’d make a pilgrimage I’d bring some candles to melt, or some trinket to hang, or I’d add to the structures. I wanted to contribute- this was a place that I wanted to be a part of, that had this amazing magnetism in its complete mystery.

I had a lot of ideas for what it could be or mean. Maybe people sacrificed or spilled goat’s blood. maybe a place where wiccans worship trees, maybe a homeless person or two made this as a kind of camp… maybe it’s haunted or the scene of mystical, spiritual things. I don’t believe in that stuff, but this place incited those kinds of wild thoughts."

This album is kind of a meme on here but it always makes me think of the wonderful wild.
Especially the start of it.

also thanks for the positive feedback on the film, actually means a lot. This thing has been a stress haha.

Doesn't help that I actually found the dude who made/maintains the shrine and he's a legitimate schizophrenic self-absorbed delusional garbonzobean who took away all of the majesty of the place for me.
