Mac is almost like the antidote to what you describe. He plays the hell out of his guitar, and actually prides himself in his musicianship. The guy writes and performs every single instrument on his records.
His music may be easy-listening, but most of his peers in the P4k crowd that make similar, beachy, "chill" music don't have half the chops Mac has. I personally have always loved 70s FM and Yacht Rock because the musicianship is always incredible if totally understated. Mac is no different.
