Can we stop pretending like AHWT isn't by far the best Mountain Goats record? I know it's what everyone says, but that's because its just that fucking good. The melodies, stories, lyrics, and performances are all the absolute best John has ever done, it's practically the perfect lo fi album.
Zopilote is pretty good though, I'd say its probably his 2nd best lo fi release.

Zopilote Machine has been my favourite Mountain Goat album since the autumn of 2013. Easily his best work lyrically, and there's a real power to the music.

Not him, but Get Lonely is great too. Perhaps a little monotonous and bleak, but that is the point of the album I guess, its meant to be miserable.

I don't know if lo fi acoustic works as well for a lot of these songs, the instrumentation is really solid on a lot of them, and the clear singing is really nice in a lot of them. and I agree with what >>63088592 says about the high points, the good songs on the album are spot on. Nothing gets to me quite like Hast thou considered the tetrapod

Come Come to the sunset tree annoys me because rather than it being lo-fi out of necessity he records it like that in a way that feels more contrived.
