Well, it depends on what you meant by drone shit I suppose. Some drone is shit, but the genre itself isn't inherently shit.
Think of it this way. There is a drone component to all music. As a genre, it's just an exploration of that component. But if great classical composers wielded elements of musical stasis as part of their toolkit, it must be a legitimate element of musical expression.

There are two other components that make drone interesting to me. You have some intersection with the medium of performance art, with the stagey performances and costumes and so forth, and legends of shenanigans they pulled recording the albums.
And then you have the whole idea of making your sound equipment itself sort of an art project, using these technologies like tube amps in ways that push the limit of their original intent. You see it better in stuff like Dan Deacon and his crazy home made circuit board shit, but you get that stuff in drone as well.

I've taken normies to see Sunn0))) numerous times and they always have a fun time.
It's a really goofy and fun experience. They fill the room with fog and come out in ringwraith costumes and menace you. Dudes come out on stage and do weird shit like worship the sound or whatever. They see the wall of amps and get scared, but then the sound is so low frequency that it's actually really warm and pleasant and you can feel it physically, like a blanket.
It's just a great and approachable stage show and when you go to these shows they are packed with equal mix of like old bearded tattooed guys, young hipsters, and normies. Sort of like Medieval Times or something.
