But while we're on it, the cartoon aspect of it is the only reason it got past the first disappointing album. Then they fixed it with demon days which is amazing, and I think that both DD and plastic beach are on the same level.
But yes, Jamie Hewllet is amazing, and this is one band I keep coming back at least once a year ever since 2001, 2002, I don't remember.

First album's actually pretty decent trip-hop. It's just really cartoonish to the point of lacking a decided focus. It's not unlike listening to Viva La Woman! in a way. Demon Days just saw them focus on a theme and sound a bit darker. Otherwise it's not that different.
