A banjo with distortion just sounds like an electric guitar. The distinct twang that comes from the snare drum as the body just gets eaten by the distortion. Honestly, even clean electric banjos sound bad - it just loses some twang. All professionals I know of use mic'd acoustic banjos.
I do know of groups that play heavier or non-country with banjos - but usually the parts with banjo are distinct from the heavy parts. Panopticon definitely does, Wovenhand could be said to. A couple of gothic country bands like Strawfoot will have like a swing-ish or rock-ish rhythm with electric guitar and might play banjo alongside it.
