gotta go fast

“If you were not all such tedious fellows, Das Rheingold would be finished within two hours.” (Wagner to Hans Richter. And for comparison, an average Das Rheingold performance probably takes around 2'30)

Wagner calling people tedious when Act II of Die Walküre exists is kind of funny though

I think a friend of mine saw that production not too long ago. He said the presentation was amazing.

There are other factors besides the time signature. Some productions might spend time in between acts. That wastes some of the time.

>All shit.

Yeah. I'll not trust your opinion. Why do so many faggots in /mu/ have to have such edgy opinions? You know there's SOME room for criticism between "essential" and "shit".

Most non-retards would temper their opinion of what are objectively good recordings. You don't have to like them, or even to think they're great, but they're far from shit.

>>62376361
>Respond to an entire graph of great classical pieces in great recordings with a single piece.
>Its a single fucking piano piece by scriabin.

God damn I'm starting to think he's almost a meme. Scriabin is bloody brilliant, a great story, great music, and great performances. Probably close to all of his piano work surpasses that of Stravinsky, but would any of them rival The Rite of Spring? Or dozens of his other works? No.

>>62376342

>>62377035
The requiem. I'm not a big fan of Faure overall though.

>>62376280
I got a LOT of great music off of mediafire, but that was damn well near 7-8 years ago now. The internet's cracked down on a lot of good shit, limewire is long since dead and diseased, and a lot of torrent sites don't have much to offer.

If you check piratebay you might be able to fight a box-set torrent of Mahler and Schubert's collected works for download.

But if you want SPECIFIC recordings that are good then just pay for them. Classical music needs support, and the chances of you finding old recordings from specific performers playing specific pieces is pretty fucking low senpai.

Another good source is libraries though. Most decent sized libraries will have CD reserves that you can take out to upload. Most will have decent audio qualities, variety, and a good sized classical section. In my experience anyways.

Gergiev is underrehearsed and his orchestra makes a ton of technical mistakes; most egregiously, the tam tams are off rhythm in the dance of the earth

Glenn Ghoul's Bach reeks of autism; there are so many better recordings as Bach is such a cornerstone of the keyboard repertoire

Argerich is fine, but Rachmanshitoff is garbage

How can Beethoven be the greatest musician of all time when he isn't even the greatest black musician of all time?
>>
>>62378248
I think that Beethoven is easily the 2nd best or 1st best. Although I wouldn't say its because of the best of any of those genres.

Beethoven was innovative and evocative. He practically invented romanticism. The parameters by which we judge greatness pretty much have to come down to depth and innovation to make any sense, otherwise its almost all just about taste imo.

Mahler's 2nd symphony
Ravel's or Grieg's string 1st string quartet.
Scriabin's Black Mass or White Mass

kind of a moot point in this case though, since recordings used for the statistic i provided do not have an intermission (obviously) since they are on CD and that would be silly.

also pretty much every production i have seen of Rheingold does the entire opera all the way through with no interruptions. there is no acts in Rheingold unlike the other operas of the Ring, only scenes (4).

Its pretty much the most useless debate of all.

I think anyone with a brain knows that Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach are the three greatest composers of all time. Its really just a matter of where you put who and by how much.

That's assuming you even agree that they're comparable.

Hello /classical/. I love classical music and I began composing on my own time for fun. This is a snippet from a piece that I plan to compose. I was wondering what you guys think of it? The fact is quite obvious once one grows up from their mysticism obsessed avant-teen period. Scriabin just adapted the mystic chord many times to the sonata form and miniature forms of Chopin and compatriot Russian composers, often resulting in works that simply abused the dynamics of the instrument(s) in order to evoke imaginative ejaculation.

>In marked contradiction to this notorious evaluation from Dr Burney, [Gesualdo's] technique [is] considerably more consistent, sophisticated, rigorous and disciplined than that of many contemporaries, and even of such accepted masters as Palestrina and Victoria. This has made the task of reconstruction both easier and more difficult - easier because the 'rules' are so clear and unequivocal, and more difficult because there are consequently so few possible solutions to each point of imitation.
James Woods talking about reconstructing Gesualdo's second book of motets there. The orthodoxy (and indeed conservatism) of Gesualdo's composition techniques in the motets is what allowed him to reconstruct the two missing parts.

>Palestrina

One would certainly hope so since his compositions have been used as models for vocal compositions for four hundred years. With the wisdom of hindsight such advancement seems a matter of course but, but if you were predicting the development of music in the mid 1550s, before Palestrina came onto the scene, it is not at all obvious that Palestrina's style would become so significant.

It's obvious you've never even studied Scriabin's works to know that he couldn't sign his full name without writing "Recapitulation" or in ternary form. Of course you're too busy being ignorant and Germanophobic to become informed, also evidenced by lumping the entire Five together as if they were one united cause (and by the way, there are more Russian composers than the Five).

>>62399688

We've reached peak /classical/.

I'm not going to address the Scriabin argument since it's already too Gouldy in here. But I should mention that when I say "German" I'm referring to a certain style of music rather than a group of people. There are plenty of non-Germans who have composed German (repetitive, formalist, anti-hearing) music - Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Stravinsky.
>>
>>62403090
>possibly the most aesthetically restrained composer of his time even when analyzed in a vacuum never mind when compared to the contemporary cretinous fanfares of germany
Thus it was written.

>>62403145
Oh look, two more composers Scriabin owes much to. Might I add on Schumann and Wagner as well?
>>
>>62402819
Shitting on the 9th happens because "Ode to Joy" is probably his most well known music in popular culture, and there's plenty of contrarians here.

>>
>>62403477
If you really enjoy it sure, but if you're not used to reading music then it'll take a while to find all the notes, even if the 1st Gymnopedie is quite simple.

>>62403499
You can find influences of Chopin, Schumann, and Tchaikovsky everywhere in his miniature pieces. The early Sonatas were modeled from Chopin and Schumann's sonatas while Liszt's B minor Piano Sonata and Dante Sonata were models for his later sonatas. Scriabin shared their flair for increasingly chromatic piano textures as well as Chopin's inconspicuous use of counterpoint. Beethoven less so, though he borrows some ideas from his late sonatas, of which the Op. 109 he played as his graduation recital.

Wagner and Mussorgsky were fixtures and major harmonic influences, going well into his late period works.

>>62402871

The 2nd and 4th movements are the best movements of the symphonies though.

it's just one of those pieces; other than the ones you linked I like a live recording of Freire, Meyer, Fevrier, 1936 Gieseking. Godowsky and Rosenthal are interesting too, but they view the work in an entirely different vein from the rest

there's also the 1957 Michelangeli recording where he blows through the work in less than 4 minutes, not too much breath between phrases but the extreme tempo combined with perfect technique creates some interesting moments

from a music theory standpoint and not your shitty opinion, they really arent. pretty much every great chopin player has stated that either his mazurkas or nocturnes are his best miniatures. filled with sly complex rhythms and penchant for experimenting with harmony and counterpoint, they're some of the most difficult chopin pieces to pull off correctly.
