Do you really care if other people take a genre seriously? Just listen to the music and don't give a damn what other people think, /metal/ has been cheesy since the late 60s, and has almost always been, it's not meant to be taken seriously unless it's really "artsy" prog. Black metal and death metal too, at their inception were cheesy.
Also Galneryus arguably has the best songwriting in power metal, though. They definitely don't use symphonies as a cover-up or as a gimmick, but as another sound to incorporate into your music. What's wrong with this? Why limit your music?

Been running a lot of Brazilian and Colombian thrash/death/black bands from the mid 80s to early 90s: Sarcofago, pre-Roots Sepultura (that Bestial Devestation...), Reencarnación, Dorsal Atlantica, Blasfemia, Mutilator, Chakal, Sextrash, Vulcano, Pentagram (CL), and Mystifier.
Grave Desecrator, Unaussprechlichen Kulten, and maybe a couple others that are current... do some homage to this nasty style.
Any other good recommendations from our brothers from the south? Maybe missed some mid 80s/90s gems? Killer, pissed off shit.
