i dont think appearances are always more important than the music. if you're watching an opera, you don't need to see what anyone is wearing to understand what the music is conveying.
i think good bands just know how to take advantage of visuals(album art, costumes, performance) to enhance and recall the musical experience.
I believe that good visual aesthetics are very important
but not the be all and end all if the music sucks
music is number 1 but if you want a decent following then you need a good aetshetic that compliments your music
