>>
>>61962368

>>
Should've just got a crosley
>>
>>61962368
MCS is underrated as fuck you made off like a bandit OP congratulations
>>
p sweet
>>
>>61962410
i actually traded a crosley type player to get $15 off
>>
>>61962422
how do I know if a record player isn't good and will damage records?

I want to get a record player (I heard the atlp120 or something along those lines is good)but for now I have one in my house that my mother bought a long time ago that plays records, cds, casettes, and has a radio, brand is "TEAC" and it's over 10 years old
>>
>>61962525
odds are its shit
>>
>>61962596
how can you tell?
>>
>>61962773

>>61962596
Odds are you have no idea what you are talking about

>>61962807

god damn. i thought >>61962525
was op and we were still talking about the MCS

>>61962525
i was wrong i was so so wrong. the teac is trash man.
>>
What would be the cheapest worthwhile entry level turntable?
>>
>>61963116
Audio technica 120
>>
>>61963116
a functional vintage direct drive off craigslist or from a garage sale ala OP

a better value is not being produced right now. to match it you would be looking at $200-$300
>>
>>61962422
>mcs was jcpennies off the shelf brand more or less radioshack quality

>>61963116
u-turn orbit, lp120, pro-ject debut III, music hall mmf, denon dp-300, teac 300

basically all the bottom of the entry level

dont bother with used shit these days, prices on everything are inflated and most of them need more work than what it would cost to get them running right.
>>
>>61963209
>>61963266
I'm not into buying used, so looks like $300 or almost $400 is the minimum
>>
>>61963341
yes, but with most of those you get a decent starter cart, some have built in preamps, and generally well respected brands, with warrenties.

I'd venture you could go lower, but you shouldn't

uturn orbit is a favorite that has aftermarket parts should you choose. lp120 is a favorite for both price and usability, a friend of mine has it its a great table and is easily as good as my stanton st-150 which cost twice as much.
>>
>>61962368
Fad.
>>
>>61963417
This fad is taking too long in my opinion, almost like 150 years
>>
>>61963341
yeah thats a good range if you absolutely must have new.

I'm in the market for an entry level player and found a Sherwood ST-890 with an audio technica cartridge on Craigslist for 30 buckaroos. Should I go for it?
>>
>>61962368
The last thing you need to be worrying about when you're fucking with vinyl, is how much it costs.
>>
I got a Thorens 150, it's my first TT. How do I know if I have to replace the belt? And do I need to replace the cartridge or only the stylus?
>>
>>61963266
I'm aware of MCS' origin. It's great gear J C Penney had it's stuff built by NEC and Technics
>>
>>61963744
Middle school tier.
>>
Alright guys. Let's just say, HYPOTHETICALLY, I have a very large budget to spend on my vinyl set-up. Let's say $20,000. What's the best turntable, pre-amp/amp, etc. I can buy?
>>
>>61963266
It's >>61966297 again

Radio shack made some badass speakers back in the day too the Realistic Mach series, no audiophile speaker but damn fine regardless. So what's this about "radio shack quality"?
>>
>>61966015
>How do I know if I have to replace the belt?
if the platter doesn't spin
>And do I need to replace the cartridge or only the stylus?
you can replace just the stylus, but the price difference between a cartridge and stylus isn't that much, and it's a hell of a lot easier to replace the whole cartridge
>>
>>61966460
Go to a vinyl/audiophile forum. I wouldn't blow that much money on the advice of /mu/.
>>
>>61966460
75% of that should be spent on the speakers.

Recent Gets:
Tortoise - TNT
David Bowie - Blackstar

Waiting for:
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
Mother 2 OST
>>
>>61966527
Okay thanks, I'll buy a new cartridge then.
>>
>>61966583
>tfw have Talk Talk - Laughing Stock and the prices keep rising

I don't know why they keep rising but it's worth a few hundred now. It's literally more valuable than my entire setup.
>>
>>61967654
Which pressing? I just ordered the new pressing off of amazon that's coming out on the 29th.
>>
>>61966583 Amoeba is an amazing store
>>
>>61967692
There's a new one?

http://www.discogs.com/Talk-Talk-Laughing-Stock/release/3803165

That's the one I have. It looks like the new reissue has made the prices nosedive though since it used to be on there and other places for $300+. Oh well. The Verve pressing honestly amazing so I'll be passing on the new reissue.
>>
>>61963863
Just a quick rule of thumb, if you buy any old gear and there is no info about it online, its probably not brilliant.
>>
>>61968239
This.
>>
>>61967836
Yeah man

http://www.discogs.com/Talk-Talk-Laughing-Stock/release/8010427

I'm glad the price is dropping too, $100 for a 5 year old repress is ridiculous.
>>
>>61968291
It might be so high since the Ba Da Bing reissue before it was pure shit (horrible surface noise, lots of crackles on the very first play etc). What's also shit is that the only repress of Mark Hollis' solo was by Ba Da Bing too which was apparently even worse.

I really really want a repress of his solo album.
>>
>>61968335
Fuck same, his solo, Laughing Stock, and Spirit of Eden are all on par masterpieces.
>>
>>61968239
Noted, thanks.
>>
Got an onkyo cp1150f for $75. Did I do well?
>>
>>61962525
It's a lot of work setting up the cartridges and the tracking force, etc. If it various things are wrong, it could fuck up a record, even the overhang is important. I'm not too much into vinyl, so others could explain better.
