I'm probably completely wrong, but
I've always thought of It as this
A composer writes music to be performed by him or herself or others
A producer writes music to be reproduced exactly as it was produced.
You produce an album, but you compose music for the album.
You produce a track, but you compose for the track.
Therefore music producers never existed before the advent of recorded music. But composers have existed as long as musical ideas could be notated or otherwise conveyed to others.
