I sort of agree with this. The album is surely groundbreaking as beefheart is the first rock musician to employ stream of consciousness for a whole album. But there's no way in hell I could have ever appreciated it without drugs.

I had listened to the album many times but the first time I actually enjoyed it was the first time I smok weed while listen to it. That one event permanently changed the way I feel about the album. I listen to it plenty while sober now. But it shouldn't be necessary to do drugs to enjoy an album you feel me ;(

I can kinda relate to this. TMR is one of the greats in my opinion, but I've only listened to it twice. It's just kind of a behemoth of an album.
Same with Soundtracks For The Blind. That album is one of the most intense musical experiences I've had, and I've only listened to it twice. It's fantastic fucking album, but it is actually physically exhausting to listen to. And I mean that in the best way possible.
