Here comes /r/lewronggeneration

Even though he's right, most popular musicians of today DO suck. Yes, there are some pretty good obscure ones we can find but let's be real, most mainstream artists do suck compared to the past. And he's a big 90's guy & desu he's right, I miss 90's shoegaze.

Only if she dies now. I doubt she will remain relevant well into her 60s like Bowie did. It will be a footnote at best "hey remember that hot popstar from the 2010s? Yeh she ded?"

>Deak

>MC Ride
See Deak, once again they lack the mainstream appeal to be mourned on a larger scale

As much as a I hate the Amazing Fedora Man, he's probably right (on the mourning part, not on the "they suck" part), none of the currents artists will ever have the same level of fame as the dadrock elite. Only one I can imagine having a huge worldwide mourning spree will be Dave Grohl, because Nirvana

>most popular musicians of today DO suck

you do know most popular musicians from every fucking era do suck right?

>oh but muh led zep, pink floy, list goes on

Those are outliers in a sea of largely forgotten, mediocre corporate music. The 70s/80s/90s/whatever were FILLED with very popular one/two hit wonders that had a few charting hits then faded into obscurity. Bands like Led Zep were simply the very few good and famous ones. And even today, there are very popular acts that aren't shit. But b/c the industry is dying and moving away from "2-3 big conglomerates tell everyone what to listen to" to "shit load of indie labels competing for a very fragmented market", the days of big rockstars are gone

tl;dr: take off the nostalgia glasses.

There are so many talented musicians that will be missed by other talented musicians because only the talented make the effort to surround themselves with these people and listen to their work.
Mike Michells Rache is a great project full of young twenty year olds.

So much great young music featuring great young musicians that this retard is clueless about yet spews his bullshit and the sad part is people will stupidly agree with him.

What people like you don't understand is today's "sucky" pop musicians hire world class musicians to tour with them.
Kendrick Lamar has an all star band with him.
Snoop dog takes Nick smith on tour
Beyoncé takes Chris Dave and Robert Robert Glasper wherever she goes.
Jay-z picked up Tony Royster.
Gaga has Spanky Mcgurdy etc
They employ great musicians for epic paying gigs who in my opinion deserve every penny.
>>
>>61862929

>>
>>61863045

that is still besides the point, they were big because the industry back then was a gigantic monolith where labels had power to shape the industry to their whim

these days, with the internet and with everybody finding their own niche scene, the days of megastars are long, gone.

but that is besides the point I am talking about. dadrockers/lewronggenerationers always talk about "Led Zep, PF, list goes on" while conveniently ignoring the hundreds of other absolutely trash music that were considered 'popular' and are now forgotten because they were shit. led zep and pf and a handful of other bands that are still talked about today are outliers in a sea of shit

Kendrick Lamar - BlackLivesMatter flavorofthemonth rapper with little musical talent outside of changing his voice to an annoying pitch

Snoop Doggy Dogg - Has not been seemingly relevant in years, very poor artistry, only known for being a goofball weed smoker

Beyonce - Pop star with little talent, very overrated by tween girls for her feminist BS

Jay-Z - Yet again, little substance, mostly braggadocious crap with little replay value, very uninteresting as a person and rapper, faux persona is awful, he's basically dead now too

Gaga - LOL... P-P-Poker face OMG SO ARTISTIC XD TUMBLR IS MY LIFEEEE

My dad lived through the 70s, he luckily didn't forget what was actually playing on the radio in 1972. Hint - it sure wasn't Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Try Osmonds, Carpenters, BJ Thomas...

A lot of the Top 40 from that time has not survived and classic rock stations don't play it. For example, the Rolling Stones had a big radio hit with Angie but you never hear that song anymore.
>>
>>61863262
>there are no modern "legendary" artists like Bowie
I think this is because the extent of music is slowly but surely being uncovered

Bowie lived in the perfect time for music, where music moved very fast. And Bowie was great at discovering the Zeitgeist of each era and integrating himself into it and helping to shape it. Now it feels like music has stagnated in a way and there's no real *big* trend any more, like one you can assign to an entire decade.
I think for the legendary part, you have to be part of the development of music as a whole, and I can't see that happening any more, because there's not much more to develop.

As people age upwards so too will "legendary" musicians. People like James Hetfield, Thurston Moore, Brian Eno, etc will cause the Reagan era folks/80s babies pain. Today's reality is that pop stars like Taylor Swift are the beloved icons who people hang posters of. Besides Billie Joe from Green Day I don't think many other rock stars that "millennials" know will get the reaction Bowie got. Possibly Chris Martin from Coldplay will be mourned heavily too. Pop rock flavor of the month like Imagine Dragoons won't.

>God isn't real. Get the fuck over it, you infant

Which god isn't real? There's some thousands of named deities in recorded history.
>>
>>61863433
I'd disagree. I think there are niche generes right now that even if they don't particularly sell out stadiums for concerts they have an impact on the music that is made after and in that sense it's legendary to its listeners which people seem to always down play. There's always someone listening.
My example would be Tony Williams after his release of believe it. All of a sudden drummers started playing open sloshy hi hats and incorporating rock grooves if you will into music. Meshuggah gave rise to this whole djent generes from like 2003 on and that's exploded into all kinds of gnarly and shitty bands.
Idk if that made sense. I'm pretty baked right now.
>>
the only thing that went away was the brutal hegemony of the 70s, where rock was the only serious music allowed
that's the reason that in 2015 you are aware of (say) david bowie and unaware of (say) marva whitney

there is as much of not more good music released now in a year than there used to be but because the market is so fragmented the majors have stopped taking chances on good things and instead just release safe sellers

People forget as well that a lot of now-venerated artists were laughed at or criticized back in the day. You think the Rolling Stones were universally loved in 1969?

Black Sabbath weren't critically acclaimed or considered legends until the 80s. During the early 70s it was all like "Waddafug is this shit? Where's all the songs about cars and girls?"

It can sometimes take years before an artist's impact is realized.

It was all a conspiracy by radio stations and record labels anyway; starting with the Beatles, stations decided they were all going to play guitar music instead of jazz or whatever so the kids ate it up like Valiums. Being that there was no Internet back then, you had no choice but to listen to the guy banging on the guitar and drums.

That's debatable because jazz had starting in the 50s devolved into pretentious fedora music that you could no longer dance or fuck to. If you consider the situation in 1965 when the Beatles broke, rock was in its infancy - Rock Around The Clock and Maybellene were only ten years earlier and there were probably at most a few hundred rock songs in existence back then.

Rock was new and exciting and had limitless untapped potential in the 60s. After 50 years, it's pretty well been mined out and so no longer relevant.

Nostalgia goggles is a little funny because my mom is a typical boomer who thinks country music=Waylon Jennings/Johnny Cash/George Jones and that the stuff since the 90s sux.

So I said to her "But don't you know why Waylon and Willie were called 'outlaw country'? It's because they rebelled against the Nashville Grand Ol Opry establishment. Once upon a time, people would have said that Johnny Cash wasn't real country because he didn't sound like Ernest Tubb."

Damn, you should have seen the look on her face. She had no answer for that.

I actually like how the post-1980 country brought back good-time fun music. So much of the George Jones-era stuff was just depressing "I'm drinking my life away in a redneck bar in a redneck country and my wife cheated on me and...my dog got hit by a tractor trailer."
>>
I'll definitely be sad when a musician I like dies. Especially if they're still putting out good music when it happens. Even people like Taylor Swift will have people mourn her because she has a lot of fans. I doubt there will be someone on par with Bowie in this situation but there will still be smaller groups of mourners from fans.

Modern Musicians are not valued as much. be it because they don't plat "REEAL MOOSIK" or just because people don't care about them is a different question though.

>Real rock is dead

Not true. There's tons of great bands playing in local scenes/clubs, but record labels don't want to sign rock groups anymore, one reason being that it takes time to develop a band and you can't get the immediate, quick money you do with pop stars.

Most rock groups peak in their late 20s (the magic 27) while a pop star can be spinning platinum records before the age of 20 like Britney did.

I know. Dee Snider called Jew Simmons out on his shit when he was going into a tirade about how rock is dead and illegal downloading blah blah blah. He said "My esteemed colleague Gene Simmons has said that there's no good rock anymore. I disagree. You can go in any club in America and find lots of great, fresh, exciting, talented young kids in bands. If anything is dead, it's the tyranny of the old music distribution system."

Here's The Amazing Atheist reacting to someone who said that indie music is actually much better.
>>
>>61864190
>>61864142
Boomers have held a grip on pop culture for so long that we were all told that only 50s-60s electric blues was the real stuff even though back then, they were criticized for not sounding like the old-time acoustic blues like Leadbelly.

Luckily they're getting old and gradually losing their mind control power over us.
>>
>>61865487
Simmons has always been a scum to everyone know this mess
>>
>>61865161
nah i mean ask him on twitter
just get it out there what his benchmark is
>>
I think Indie stuff has been getting more popular, so more pretentious assholes are getting attention. My local scene is full of that stuff, so I guess I'm biased or something. I wish someone would just invent a new genre.

Well...all music reflects the zeitgeist of its time. Leadbelly and Robert Johnson reflected life in the Jim Crow/Depression/New Deal-era South while the 50s guys like Howlin' Wolf represented the more urbanized postwar culture.

And I should state that HW, Muddy, and friends got bit because of the good luck that their music was a major ingredient in rock and all the white hippie kids got into them.
