jazz is a very wide tradition and it's not clear what is jazz and what isn't

the most common unifying theme is a strong emphasis on improvisation, but there is music that doesn't feature much improvisation that listeners would classify as jazz anyway

I'll personally be happy to refer to anything with improvisation and an emphasis on self-expression through playing an instrument or singing as jazz, but ymmv
