Diary has 3 really amazing songs (Seven, The Blankets Were the Stairs, Pheurton Skeurto) but everything else is brought down by the wailing. LP2 is even worse in that regards; I only like Red Elephant off it.
Their last two albums are awesome, though. I think they matured really really well unlike a lot of other 90s emo bands.

How It Feels is great - it's what I expected Diary to be like when I first listened to it. I just can't get into Diary besides a couple songs.
And The Rising Tide is a really cool alt/experimental (for an emo band, at least) record that unfairly gets shit on.

They were right in their prime while Cosmic Jokers albums were recorded. Yeah, that CJ album isn't the best thing ever, but it's still really good for jamming that wasn't even supposed to be released. I particularly like the B-side, it reminds me of Tangerine Dream's Zeit.

Anyway most of my 5* albums are rated as such because of nostalgia and the impact they had on me when I was a kid. I rarely revisit them. Check my 4.5* and 4* sorted by rate date to get a better view of my current tastes.

I'm pretty sure the popular opinion is that Technique is their best but Technique is the album where I listen to the full thing on repeat several times over while PC&L has a bunch of songs I love to listen to hundreds of times over and as a whole, the album is still pretty great, it's just not as good at staying consistent in tone, New Order is one of my favorite bands for the record
