It seems Bowie has caused a meme reset, so let's have an honest discussion: after almost a year, what do you think? I still think it's decent, the first couple songs are fantastic but there are some moments here and there in the rest but overall not as good as GKMC
>>
>meme reset

why did i laugh at this?
>>
>>61812390
I personally think it's slightly weaker than GKMC. I can see it being AOTY from a cultural perspective, but I don't think it was anywhere near. AOTY musically

still good though
>>
It's objectively not the best hip hop album of 2015. Objectively. There are at least 10 releases better than it. Everybody knows this, except those in denial.

It only dominated critical charts because it was somehow "relevant" as if that means ANYTHING musically + all critics are balding Elvis Costello looking-ass self-hating white nu males.
>>
Extremely mediocre hip-hop album. What ends up being its most memorable moments are its shortcomings.

If you like this album you are either:

Haha. Do you see the irony in your post? Rightie whities are pissed that blacks and whites both enjoy the album. So instead of try to come up with their own "better" music, they choose to yell "you just like it cuz you got white guilt!" as a means of distracting people from their own shortcomings (i.e: the distinct lack of good releases from white artists in 2015).

My favourite part of these threads comes just after people point out Kendrick's stupid fucking lyrics, when the dickriders start justifying it by saying he is rapping from the perspective of a stupid person.
>>
>>61812580
I enjoyed plenty of music that came out last year from people of every colour.
SPOILER: It wasn't because of an outdated political message.

I am better than using a tripcode? Yeah, I am. That's exactly why I'm not using one.

My favorite part is when /pol/tards misunderstand lyrics and roll with their incorrect interpretations and then circlejerk over them, while being completely unaware that the rest of us are laughing at them. Look at the number of geniuses ITT who actually believe TPAB is racist against white people.

I don't rap albums that make white people feel bad because white people created/funded hip hop.

This meme of saying that criticism of an album is bad because the listener didn't "understand" or "get" the album is wearing thin. Yes, I understand that the anon you replied to wasn't actually stating useful criticism or doing anything more than shitposting, but I'd rather have a thread of memes than a thread of people who think they've won an argument simply because the opposing party failed to show up. You don't get to take any kind of moral high ground just because nobody articulates criticism, and you sure as fuck can't cast aspirations as to the intelligence of those against you when you're communicating on an anonymous mongolian recipe sharing forum.

I like TBAB, but I think your getting bogged down by misunderstanding baited shitposting as a failure to grasp the enlightened view that you have been blessed with.

High art is specifically reserved for a people who have the intellect and cultural exposure to be able to appreciate it. It is, by definition, non-compatible with acceptance by the masses. Posting an aggregated score of mass media reviewers doesn't prove that this album has reached an upper echelon of art. I wouldn't dare say that it DISproves it, but don't think you've won because your tastes line up with cultural pundits

Your pitfall is that you're confusing shitposting with ignorance. You assume that a failure to articulately criticize a piece of music is indicative that no such criticism can be made, or else that the offending party simply doesn't have the attention span or brain power to "understand" or "get" the music.

People on /mu/ do, at the end of the day, have relatively good music tastes, an ability to acutely and actively listen to music, and the command of the english language necessary to articulate thoughts and ideas. The choice to infuriate elitists rather than subject their opinions to scrutiny of others is just one of the consequences of using this place as a medium. It does not grant you the right to feel superior or any sense of accomplishment.

GKMC is good, but "To Pimp a Butterfly" simply falls flat. You can do conscious records without all of the cliche trimmings. Musically, the sampling and production is very impressive, though. Especially with the lack luster production in HipHop that's been taking place in the last 10 years or so. I will say though, GKMC and TPAB are vastly more incredibly than any recent HipHop artist releases.

Yeah. Chuck and Kendrick grew up in different environments. Black-white relations have changed a bit since It Takes A Nation Of Millions was released. They have similar messages. but their respective audiences are/were exposed to different socio-political climates.

They are to this generation of black youth. They're growing up in an environment where black rights groups are abundant, so the Kendrick's message focuses on whether or not the black community is in fact progressing or simply trying to apologize for itself through the use of said groups/organizations. Whereas back in Chuck D's day, it was more about trying to band blacks together to form said black rights groups.

I liked the "old school" beats on Section.80. Some of the clean "trap flavored" beats on GKMC made me sick. The beats on this album are great imo. With FlyLo, Thundercat, Knxwledge.. what can you expect?

People who think this album is genuinely 10/10: where are the 10/10 moments? At what point are you thinking, "wow, that was legitimately beautiful"? This album is a jumbled mess of half-baked ideas and can only be described as "good" at best.
