ITT: Post one of your favorite artist's most underrated albums and talk about it.
others rec/rate/hate/whatever

pic related and Not Available are my favorite Residents albums. I never see the former discussed here even though it's really fantastic. The theme is duality and the nature of relationships and love, which is something the Residents don't tackle very often.
The last song always makes my stomach turn because of how fucked up it is.The imagery and narration on this album are some of the Residents' best and I really think anyone who digs them should give this album a listen. It's definitely their most theatrical album (with a chorus and defined parts) so if you're into that, even better.
love u guys. have fun

yeah, the last track on god in 3 persons really is amazing - one of residents peaks
>>
>>61715976
How's this underrated. Among sites outside here it's their highest rated album. I think ppl like to circlejerk Not Available or Eskimo instead due to Scruffles. I think all three are great albums, but ppl should know that Residents have a lot more to offer than the Not Available sound and the Not Available sound with Inuits.
>>
>>61715976
Try "Tweedles!".
It's another one of their story-centered album, but this is narrated from the point of view of a sexual predator, and it gets very gross and disturbing at times.
Plus it proves the writing talent of The Residents.
Definitely one of their best from their late period
>>
>>61716905
it really is. I had to pause it the first time I heard it because I thought I was going to be sick. I really love the story of the album
(actually come to think of it I think we're thinking of the second last track)
An album had never before and has not since had such an impact on me physically.
>>
>>61716962
well I guess it's not so much underrated as underappreciated and under-discussed on /mu/. I believe Scaruffi actually gave it a 7/10 or some relatively high rating
>>61716979
I definitely will! I am very slowly moving forward in their discog. I had only heard their early stuff for such a long time, and had heard negative things about the 80s and 90s period.
But I'm loving most of it so far. The second and third Mark of the Mole albums arent quite as strong as the first but are still enjoyable.
>>
>>61717058
yeah i never understood the hate towards their late stuff.
It's not as fantastic as their early, but it's still pretty damn solid
>>
>>61717084
even the modern live performances seem pretty sweet. seems most people don't like the 'randy' spokesperson character, though. I don't mind it at all.
Pretty sure it's Homer Flynn and he still sounds fantastic.

They do a great Hard and Tenderly at this show. As well as some other classics.

G3P is brilliant in both lyrical content and instrumentation. The other criminally underrated Residents album is 13th Anniversary Show Live in Japan (everything from this tour is great but Japan is the best imo). As for later work Animal Lover is great and of course Demons Dance Alone though it doesn't really sound like them at times.

I haven't heard any of their live albums but I'll have to give this one a listen on your rec. I haven't heard Animal Lover or Tweedles so I have to listen to those now as well. I have Demons Dance Alone on my itunes but haven't listened to it either. Lots of exciting stuff!
It's funny that you came here to post Beat. Beat and TOAPP are two great albums in their own right, but they get overshadowed by Discipline. I really dig the KC era where Belew was writing both guitar parts and singing. He's very enigmatic and a true virtuoso. but obviously gets over-shadowed by Fripp's technical skill.
>>61718157
I've only ever heard Torch of the Mystics (which I loved at first listen) so I'll have to explore their discog a little more. thanks for the contribution.

I think this is hands down his underrated masterpiece, possibly my favorite album of his, if not definitely my favorite Crazy Horse album. It captures the spirit of crazy horse in a really raw and ethereal way. It sounds mysterious and ghostly at times, almost spooky if not for how blissful and epic the music sounds. The early half is especially rewarding, with the band leading you through all these sonic passages and terrains to what feels like some hazy, mysterious destination, and by the time you reach the beautiful sublimity of Slip Away, it all makes sense. The music on the first half becomes increasingly epic until that point, which is like a release, where the music is exploding with euphoria in every single moment. The album gets messier and more subtle following that point, kind of like a comedown, but to me that just makes the experience of the album more cool and interesting.

Great album, one of my favorites. Their 2000's stuff is super underrated, Tweedles! and Animal Lover are both amazing.
>>61718157
It's a pretty dumb album though. All the sped up skit tracks are so repetitive. Fly By Night is hilarious though. Kaliflower is a really underrated one by them.
>>61718426
Horse Cock Phepner is possibly the funniest album I've ever heard.
>>
>>61718378
beautiful post, anon. I will listen to this album just because of your description. I am more of a solo Neil guy to be honest (live @ Massey hall is one of my favorite albums ever) and I never really got into crazy horse, but I will now. thanks.

Will do. Also I don't have that Yes album and I thought I had every one. weird. Just another album I'll have to give a listen. thanks to you too anon.

Kaliflower is great. "X + Y = Fuck You" is one of their best tracks. And yeah Midnight Cowboys is pretty dumb, but it has "Me and Mrs. Jones" and "Midnight at the Oasis." The cover of "Love Train" is hilarious and has some great guitar work on it.
>>

if I have only ever heard Ape of Naples (which I greatly enjoyed) what Coil album should I listen to next?

You're in for a treat.

Tip: it's their best one.
>>
>>61718740
Depends what you're looking for. Black Antlers is quite similar to it, and I think that's one of their best albums. The only album I'd put above that is Musick to Play in the Dark, which focuses more on atmospheric mood pieces and electronic stuff rather than industrial.
If you're a fan of industrial music their second album, Horse Rotorvator, is usually considered an industrial classic.
>>
>>61718936
thanks man! I actually have Horse Rotorvator in my library so I'll listen to that next.
>>61718868
it'll have to be incredibly good to surpass how highly I rate Fragile. but thanks again man.

one of my favorite of Montreal albums. can't wait for his next release.
I really didn't like Lousy for some reason. I think it was the country twang.
>>
>>61718868
>it's their best one.
Fucking no. A great album, yes, but nothing they did comes close to the sheer majestic beauty and intensity of this album, how logically composed it is, with the first track beautifully painting an image of pull from the dark to light, an awful, disgraceful place to a place that is beautiful and serene. The journey the track takes you on is amazing, and the two tracks that follow build upon that beautifully. Relayer is a fun album, but come on. Yes were at the height of their capabilities on Close to the Edge.
>>
>>61718426
Gates of Delirium is my favorite Yes track.

It's great but no it isn't.
Here's another good one. "Starship Trooper" is one of my favorite Yes tracks.
>>
>>61719726
I also love The Yes Album. One day I want to be able to play The Clap, which I thought was two guitars for the longest time.
>>
>>61719816
Steve Howe is definitely one of my biggest guitar heroes. The way he draws from so many different influences is really neat. Learn "Mood for a Day", it's really fun to play, another personal favorite.
>>

he's got some chops for sure. Even Scaruffi calls Yes the most accomplished musicians of the prog-rock movement.

while we're talking about Yes...

your opinions on this one? I loved the "proto-prog" sound, orchestral arrangements feel sweet, I think it's in my top 5 Yes albums
>>
>>61720490
I also never felt like they expanded their songs enough. "This sounds great! I wonder whats next for this song!" *song ends* "Well shit."
>>61720669
I literally actually forgot that existed, probably in my top 5 or 6.
>>
>>61720480
agreed. but they're two completely different styles of music so it's pretty odd to even compare them in the first place.
>>
>>61720669
I clicked on that picture while at work, and I just got fired for using a company computer to look at porn. Thanks!

Nah, just kidding. Time and a Word is great, and it may even be better than the debut.
>>
>>61720480
The only way that Yes and the Residents compare is that their sound and style was very distinct throughout their entire existence. I found the residence to be kind of gimmicky. It worked the first time I listened to them, but every other bit of music I've heard from them just sounded the same as the last.

>but their bond is made of leather not the flesh and blood it used to be

Gotta say it's been awhile since something managed to disturb me like this. Really loved the album especially how the instruments got more intense with each track.
>>
>>61721804
yeah the percussion picking up throughout the album is a really cool theme. also I really like the over-lapping Mr.X voices during Kiss of Flesh, it builds the intensity of the scene so much more for some reason.
also not hearing the twins "voice" until they begin laughing at mr.X was a really solid choice considering the vocal effect used for them is creepy as fuck.
I felt the same about being disturbed, but the album stuck with me for days after. Also the pain/pleasure lines at the end are fantastic.
>>

Yeah the ending is such a great bittersweet come-down from the climax. Definitely one of their finest moments.
