There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

Learn how to uphold strong opinions about hardware and software, and wonder why nobody follows the previously established format anymore

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP : posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

So i've been trying to get a similar sound to James Blake - Wilhelm Scream synth, but i can't get quite close. Saw wave, turn down frequency a bit. It also seems to be a little bit louder the moment he hits the notes. I just can't get it to sound quite as mellow.

I know that you can't get the exact same Prophet 08 sound, but how do i get something similar to this?

any recommendations for good literature/books on music theory? besides the pastebin, which is really just a bunch of charts

>>
>>61637169
I'm feeling the tempo it's at right now honestly.

didn't have something like deadmau5 in mind but I can sorta hear it, might just do that for the hell of it. always fun to make some simple house
>>
>>61637188
i think ableton put out a book that covered this kind of stuff
>>
>>61637387
That sounds cool! I mean, if that's what you weren't going for, I don't want to taint and change your original goals. Maybe that song wasn't the best example. I just feel that a cool "dun nun dun nun nun" type drop could suit what you have so far. I agree that making simple house is always fun!!
>>
>>61637229

let me clarify, i guess i misused the term workflow; all i meant was i would like some material thats more straight forward that a producer/beatmaker would have the best use of, like im not trying to learn guitar or anything so i wouldnt want to go that direction if that makes any sense
like maybe some kind of percussion theory based literature? i dont really know whats out there

snares could be a littttllee bit loud. Maybe it'd be nice to filter the voice some before the drop. Taking off some high end might obscure it in a good way. After the drop, I think it might still sound good to have some distortion on the voice, maybe the same thing layered over itself but only one being distorted. If doing that, I myself would center the distorted vocal and put the clear vocals to the sides. I'd add some more oomph and pounding after the second drop to realy make the listener go "OH FUCK". That's just me though. I like the overall song but I think it could use some more groove and oomph and pounding to make the listener bop/rock their head or wiggle their butt. Oh, also the vocals could be a bit louder. Good job though!
>>
>>61638262
*littttllee bit louder. By the way, I like that echo-iness at the end of the track.

If you want to get a serious piano vst that's really accurate and don't mind paying out for it, look into Eastwest's piano. Best one I've used so far but it is expensive
>>
>>61643047

Compression does take time to learn, but a few tips for kicks are;

You normally want a ratio of around 4:1 along with a quite fast attack and release.
Don't over compress, you can end up killing the original sample if the threshold is too low.
If it does sound too lifeless, consider parallel compression. Route the audio into a second channel, add the compressor onto that channel then blend the 2 channels to give the best of both. You'll retain the original kick sound but with the power of the compressed channel.
Consider whether you want a short punchy kick or a drawn out deep kick and adjust the sample decay time accordingly. Hardcore tends to go for the more punchy type.
Add a little notch in your bass EQ at the frequencies the kick should come through at, it'll avoid any muddiness and let the kick stand out better
>>
advise om a virtual drummachine for Fl or Ableton? something that is easy to use and layer beats upon beats?
>>
>>61654369

Use abletons impulse plugin and just drop samples into the slots. Then it's just programming things into the midi roll.

There's a great VST called Kick that let's you create great kickdrums. You can program in the sub part of the kick along with the clicky higher part and tune it to fit your track.

Eastwest have a few drum kits but they're expensive.

Avoid the vengeance packs if you can, the samples sound a bit dated and there's better stuff out there

>>
>>61660236
nah i've got a few that i've torrented but finding shit like Kontakt and having it actually work when you download it is a pain in the ass.
>>
>>61660281
It's actually really easy. Kontakt takes like 10 minutes to set up and with libraries, you just locate them and poof, or even easier, just add them manually through folders on the quickslots.
>>
>>61660304
maybe i'm just bad with this, never got it to work out for me. i'll try again soon though
>>
>>61660236

As I said above I used to used cracked copie's but I saved up enough to get to synths I like. Plus if I ever get signed (probably a pipe dream) then I don't want to risk copyright or contracts by getting caught out. Just look at that retard Carnage who boasted he use's a cracked copy of sylenth, lost his contract with Razer and may be sued by Lennar Digital for using the cracked sylenth. If you like something, try and support the devs. They can't make new stuff if they're only working for free
>>
>>61660331
And use rutracker for Kontakt libraries, it has all of them, stuff you can't find on tpb.

>>61660342
I agree, if you get money and some kind of fame, you buy your shit. But nobody gives a shit about using pirated copies. Martin Garrix, Avicii, Steve Aoki have all been caught and always used cracked shit. Carnage is just a retard who not only was caught with it, but also made fun of it and Lennar Digital decided to be salty about it and respond on Twitter, that's all tho.
>>
>>61660417
Everyonr you mentioned there are utter bellends tho and can barely be called producers
>>
>>61660523
I'm just giving you an example of the cheese masters, I'm pretty sure that 75% of producers pirate shit, underground or not. I've seen Virtual Riot, Mord Fustang and Savant with pirated shit as well.
>>
>>61642265
how do you get that staggered bell sound for the piano chords?
>>
>>61662154
They're just fm8 presets, different takes on hard left and hard right.
>>
>>61660127
I think the minilogue is just going to be an updated microkorg tb.h. I was checking some page and unless something was lost in translation is has an "analog engine".
>>
>>61662979
i heard it was digitally controlled analog

either way, it's cool that they're going for more essentially knob per function by the looks of it instead of the design that the mininova and microkorg have where you use the same x number of knobs and flip around through all the menu pages
>>
>>61654769

Thank you for the advise but is there something with preinstalled sounds or samples?
>>
>>61663325
Sample packs, and you can also try Metrum out.
>>
>>61662571
>takes on hard left and hard right.
What do you mean by this?

Also this sounds like Ryuichi Sakamoto. Was it an inspiration?

Also what drums are you using?
>>
>>61663087
>digitally controlled analog
So basically an analog poky synth.

>protip: the prophet 5, Jupiter 8, and whatever your favorite vintage polysynth is, are digitally controlled
>>
>>61663710
Like I put take 3 on the left channel and take 5 on the right channel, makes it sound fuller without making it louder

Never heard Sakamoto, just wanted to make a pet shop boys/kenny g kind of thing

I'm trying to make prog house but my melodies and chord progressions suck cock. Can anyone suggest resources to improve my song writing skills?
>>
>>61665552
Find a song you like and build melodies and chords around the existing tune. Then remove the song and edit what you added to make it yours. Use an arpeggiator to make melodies from chords.
>>
>>61665518
Not hating on people who use presets, but if you spend some time learning synthesis you'll find it really rewarding to make everything yourself.

>>61665552
Progressive house is based on emotions, you should learn some music and play some chords on the piano, you're gonna need to have your musical knowledge be a proxy to expressing your emotions.
>>
>>61665610
Also, I occasionally find that if I take a lacklustre chord sequence or melody that I'm not happy with, and slow it down or run it backwards, sometimes it gives me new ideas.
>>
>>61665552
Just hit record and fuck around on a midi keyboard making random chord shapes, if you hear something that catches your ear than isolate it. Found some cool jazz shit that I don't understand that way
>>
>>61665636
Also, something else you can do, is try to take emotional chord progressions from orchestral and jazz settings, and bring that in a progressive house setting. Especially love theme progressions from film scores.
>>
How do you into kick making?
Layering different samples or making everything from scratch in a synth?
The ones i make in a synth usually sound pretty weak and i don't know how to fix that
>>
>>61665518

>>
>>61665875

well yeah i'm not talking about just holding down a key and acting like you made the sequence that plays, but for just basic leads/basses/etc that you can play/effect in whatever way i don't see anything wrong with using presets.

i just dont like synthesis though, i've never been able to get into it. i have a much better time with effects and sampling/resampling for my sound design
>>
>>61666163
>2016
>not being p u r e af

I wouldn't call it autistic, i'm sure many people who are actually into synthesis get triggered by this
>>
>>61666226
I don't have an issue using a fuck ton of sample libraries and sample packs, or even Omnisphere, but when it comes to actual synths, I get triggered by presets.

He's right though. Although there exists different genres, music that is considered to be good is usually similar in many ways except for superficial styles. They all have a range of contrasts and balances of different parameters parameters like rhythm, pitch, instrumentation etc. Newbie composers don't know about those things that you can do that is exactly the thing needed to make boring music interesting.

I made a GUI compressor in PD. I call it the FL-KD.
>>
>>61675708
are there any pros to making your own shit with PD apart from learning synthesis in and out?
>>
>>61677133

I'm fairly green at this so it's hard to answer that, but the strength from what I've seen is that you can modulate and fuck with pretty much any aspect you want. It's a weird thing coming from a VST environment, even with very powerful synths, to this and discovering that you can add any operations (oscillators, operators, LFO's, envelopes) wherever, and then connect them any crazy way you want. You can combine subtractive, FM, additive synthesis and sampling in the same patch. If you've ever used a usual VST synth and went "I wish I could connect 'this' thing to 'that' thing", or "I wish there was a slider for this", this is the most fun part about it.

Other than that, there are loads of ways to make generative/random stuff happen, and the ways to twist samples are endless. You can also connect any controller or usb device and use it to control any parameter, which is what most people use it for in live performances.
>>
>>61677133
yes there is with pd or max 7

whatever you prefer

imagine your daw doesnt come with something you need and it is too expensive to buy as a plugin

you can just make it for yourself if youre experienced with that shit

th-thanks friend. the song's about 5mins long. ihave it all written-out as sheet music. drums are sequenced, and i already did the bass part and the rhythm guitar part in earlier sessions, and now i'm struggling with guitar 1. the rhythm part was fairly easy, the bass was easy enough but took a lot of minor edits to get it spot-on. i figured the bass kinda has to be confident and accurate for the song to work. and i don't play like i used to so my fingers are bretty raw too.

For people who make ""IDM"" or any fast technical midi music on FL Studio

What are your techniques for resampling?

For example, If I wanted to add some reversed reverb to build some tension in a track, what would be the most efficient way to do that?

I have done a lot of experimentation with importing a clip with effects on it out of the DAW and importing it again to further manipulation, but it seems like a very inaccurate and slow technique of resampling

Please share any techniques!

also, I realize Ableton is better for this kind of thing, but I am just learning it right now and I am pretty quick on FL Studio so I am still making tracks on FL although I hope to transition to Ableton very soon

Not worked in a studio myself but known guys who have and they got pissed off at artists thinking they knew more than the studio guys.

"Can't you autotune the mistakes out"
"I want the drums to be eardrum-ripping" - actual quote from an artist
>>
>>61678817
If you think guitar is expressive, imagine the violin. Every little fucking movement inside your body makes a dent in the sound you make.
>>
>>61684628

Definitely, it's so hard trying to write violin parts and get them sounding realistic. I don't actually play violin but use the eastwest stuff so they sound great but it's getting things like vibrato right and that slightly off time groove so they don't feel robotic. I can imagine getting them recorded live in a study can be tricky
>>
>>61684594

Most times clients know what they want but have no idea how to describe it and part of learning how to work as an engineer (and later on, as a producer) is developing methods of not only translating their ideas into methods, but also of demonstrating examples of what you think they mean.

Having a library of example sounds was one way I found to bridge this gap in what is essentially knowledge - "what you call such-and-such is what we call this" is an often used phrase because of that.

Even if you don't have an exact example of what a client wants you might still have a starting point that you can use to get more info from them - "yeah a bit like that but [insert arbitrary description of sound here]".

It's about listening to your client and having the patience to extract their ideas while not making them feel small - in smaller demo studios this will be an everyday task.
