No. There's no rulebook. Singing is a way to get a sound out, if that doesn't work then you find another way to get that sound.

This was done before this album, pitches were changed all the time. The Beatles sped up "don't pass me by" to make Ringo's voice funnier, they messed around with loads of tape speeds, the mono version of "she's leaving home" is a semitone higher to make paul sound younger.
Caroline No, from Pet Sounds, is also raised in pitch.
I don't know why people get so annoyed by processing/autotuning/pitch correcting vocals.
They're just another instrument. If you can enhance, distort, speed up/slow down or otherwise manipulate a guitar, then why not the voice too?
