Is Deak starting beef with Animal Collective?
Releasing his highly anticipated solo album at basically the same time Animal Collective is releasing their new album? Shots have clearly been fired here, this isn't a coincidence.
My sources close to the situation tell me that Deak made a power-move and tried to get "3-4" of his own songs on the new album. Avey & Panda refused to give him more than 1 and Deak basically said "fuck it, I'll just make my own album"
An interesting side note, the album was originally called "Painting With Deakin" (he was originally scheduled to get 1 song + the ability to paint the album cover) but after he got the boot, they just kept "Painting With".
Overall, really interested to see what happens now. Part of me doesn't like seeing family fighting but at the same time Deak has been mistreated for years. Honestly a big risk/reward move by Deak here. If he gets a higher P4K score than Animal Collective, he's going to cash in big time. If not, he may have both a failed solo album and burned his bridges with the Collective. This is going to get very interesting.

Painting With sounds completely different from anything Animal Collective has done. It sounds more closely related to Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks and PBVGR. Big bombastic beats with really warbly, warm, analog sounding synths. Really nice stuff. I also get more of a 60's psych vibe from some of these tracks but with a modern twist. Can't fully say, to be honest, since I've only heard the 30 second smaples. From what I have heard though, it doesn't sound like Beach Boys or Strawberry Jam.
