Fiio X1, or if you want a better DAC, Fiio X3 mkII.
They're not as sleekly designed and you need to buy a separate microSD for storage but sound quality is far, far superior.

I've never had an ipod classic, so can't compare. But the build quality seems good, and sound quality is very good. It can play FLAC, it's drag & drop, and it also acts a USB DAC.
You need to factor in the cost of a 128GB microSD.
Only major downside for me is that there is no way of scrobbling to last.fm (the Fiio does not keep playcount info).

mine is slowly dying. the HDD crackles from time to time and the battery life is like an hour. I read that quite some ppl just replaced the battery and the hdd and it worked fine. even some modded ipods to 500gb and so on. probably gonna give this a shot in the next weeks

The battery life is great even when using Flac files. I have the A25 (pretty much the same apart from better bluetooth) and the audio is pretty nice with my IE80's
I've got an iBasso DX50 and 128gb ssd card. It's nice. Not sure how the Fiio X1 is but I had a Fiio amp and dac before and had nothing but issues with it.
