Hey /moo/, I've recently realized I'm pretty much in love with this record (Third Ear Band's S/T or "Elements") and that I'm really not familiar with anything like it. I'd like to hear similar folk music recommendations.

I'm aware of Comus' First Utterance, and even though The Herald is one of my favorite folk songs, I'm not that keen on the album as a whole.

Show me your adventurous folky sounds, /mu/!

it's a terrible album and you should feel bad for your shit taste

I'm looking for something more free-form I think. In Elements I really like how each instrument plays an important role in the overall sound, yet none of them stick out too much. I guess they're really skilled performers because the songs don't completely feel like improvisations, but that's what I like about them - they're grounded, yet adventurous at the same time.

What about something like Jackie-O Motherfucker?
>>

Never listened to them, what should I check out?
Also, thinking of checking out Sun City Girls, not sure if that fits my criteria or not

For Jackie-O their most critically acclaimed album was Fig 5, but my personal favorite is Liberation.

Sun City Girls' most "freak folk" release was 330,003 Crossdressers, so maybe check that one out first. I can't really get into their more rock stuff anyway.

Also be sure to check out Dr. John - Gris Gris if you haven't already. It's a classic.

Great man, thanks a lot, I'll be sure to check those out.

Blue Afternoon - Tim Buckley
Starsailor (my favorite) - Tim Buckley
Lorca - Tim Buckley

Too much emphasis on vocals / signer-songwriter style of music (I think? I've only heard a few songs). Like I said before I'd like it to be more improv and out-there (I'm not sure if Freak Folk is an appropriate term)

Oh, and this is more jazz/Vietnamese trad than folk, but listen to Nguyên Lê - Saiyuki for interesting instruments, timbres, and improvisation. Some of it gets really out there too.

Traditional music sounds great, much appreciated!

Starsailor is pretty out there dude, though the singer songwriter sound isn't there, fair enough

>>61471641
I'm actually looking to avoid the singer-songwriter sound, so yeah, I'll check out starsailor - thanks dude!

try Joe Harriott - Indo-Jazz Fusions
>>
I've listened to bits of Dr. John and Nguyen Le and even though it's not exactly what I am looking for - it's enjoyable and I'll make sure to dive in further

Noted!

There isn't the singer/songwriter sound, at least as far as I'm concerned, but he is actually a singer/songwriter. There is an emphasis on the vocals for sure. You might not like it. Also its quite psychedelic. All that being said I like it because it grooves pretty hard at moments, and meanders in his improv.

listen to Aktuala
they're like an italian version of third ear band
